Buying a new HDD

I’d like some piece of advice because my Xbox 360 120GB HDD is almost full (because of you silly charters ^^) and I’m planning to buy a 500GB one to not have this problem anymore.

I saw on Amazon that there is a cable to buy to automatically transfer the content of my hard drive to the new one but I’d like to know if I’m expected to deal with license issues for official RB content or if everything should go smoothly? In general, could shit happen with saved data, for RB or every other game?

I’ll play on the same Xbox 360 than now (Elite model, not slim, the oldest in a word) and I plan to move everything on this new hard drive: saved data, dlcs, entire games got for free thanks to XBLGold program and, dealing with RB, I’ll move on this new drive only official RB content in a TU5 environment.

If this can be done safely, I’ll use my 120GB drive only for RB with my official songs turned into cons + all of my customs, within a TU4 environment, and play offline with this one.

If I’m missing something, please let me know.

Everything goes smoothly AND you need to deal with the licenses. The license “issue” is not a customs related thing: Microsoft has made it so that if you play offline any piece of DLC that you bought on another console/HDD, you need to have it licensed for that specific console/HDD. So, you’re gonna have to redownload all the songs (actually, you will elect to download the songs and only the license will be updated, so the process is quick for each file).

I currently have all my official content repackaged into unsigned custom CON files. I can’t play them online with TU5 but I can now play them offline on any console without the internet with TU4. Another advantage is I don’t have to switch TU to play official / custom. I can now freely play my entire library custom and official at the same time.

Another advantage is that before I had around 300 single songs that would take 10min or so to load on the Xbox 360. Now I have it all packaged into 12 files (around 1700 total songs) that takes about 20sec to load.

Keep a backup of all your official content if anything goes wrong.

Holy sh**, I was expecting this kind of trouble to not happen on the same console if only the drive is changed. :wth: If it’s a Microsoft thing, it does mean it is the same exact problem for any dlc from any other game I bought, right? So I’ll have to re-license everything I own? Then, what if the content is no more available as, for instance, the Metallica track pack for RB or a particular dlc for another game? Last question here: I guess everything I’ve downloaded so far still appears in my “download history” and can be re-downloaded from the dash board so that I won’t have to go inside the marketplace of each game and try to find every single file I own?

I feel happy I asked this question here though, it will surely save me some time when something happens to go wrong later.

That’s actually what I’ll do on my “small” HDD. I plan to have it be dedicated to RB3 only and I already exported all my official songs to my PC : I’m keeping a back-up (LIVE files) on my PC and I also have a full-CON version of my library there. Btw I’m now finishing to bundle these CONs with their RBHP upgrades, I just have 50 songs left to go (out of ~330 songs I own which currently have a RBHP upgrade).

Next step will be to transfer the content of my 120GB HDD (containing only official content) on my future 500GB HDD. Then, on the 500GB one, I’ll have to re-license everything. :sweatdrop: And on the 120GB one, I’ll create packs as you did for my cons. So I’ll be able to play online with the 500GB HDD and not switch everytime between TU4 and TU5. I’ll just have to switch drives when partying at home or, way more convenient, to bring my 120GB drive to friends’ when partying elsewhere.

I was under the impression the official 500 gb hdd is only available for the Slim Xbox 360, not the original models.

Found that on Amazon France, it’s certainly the one I’ll order.

Yes, it appears in your download history, and that answers the first question too.

Thank you again Farottone. I won’t have to deal with the system license but only with the local license, which implies to redownload everything in my download history.

As a side note, be careful which transfer cable you buy on Amazon – there’s the official transfer cable and a third-party one (made by some random Chinese manufacturer) both for sale up there. The third-party one straight up doesn’t work. I know, cause I blew $10 on it.
