Bond…James Bond (Potential Spoilers, Naturally)

Inspired by a conversation on a fellow C3 user’s customs topic I want to discuss the famous James Bond. This is for anything related to Bond of course, but I’m curious about a few things:
- Who is your most and least favorite Bond actor?
- Who is your most and least favorite Bond villain?
- What is your most and least favorite opening/theme?
- Which is your most and least favorite film?
For me:
- Favorite is actually Daniel Craig. He’s a tad bit too blocky since he’s so damn thin but otherwise he fits Bond very well. Serious. Badass. Once and a while a sharp sense of humor. Though Sean Connery was more like the Bond Ian Fleming wrote I still like Craig’s portrayal best. Pierce Brosnan is a close second. Least favorite is actually Roger Moore, which apparently is as unpopular an opinion as liking Craig and Brosnan. I just didn’t feel he fit how Bond should be. He’s a decent actor but he’s not Bond. Timothy Dalton would also be a close second.
- As far as bond villains, it would have to be Max Zorin because Christopher Walken. Though I did like Auric Goldfinger. Least favorite…actually, I’ll have to get back to you on that. I don’t remember many of the Bond villains. I guess May Day was a villain most of the View to a Kill film and I didn’t care for her all that much.
- Favorite opening is definitely Skyfall. Not sure about least favorite either, it’s actually been a while since I’ve seen most of the non-popular ones. I remember not liking the one for You Only Live Twice all that much.
- My favorite film might actually be either Casino Royale, Die Another Day, Skyfall, or License to Kill. Least favorite…actually, I didn’t care for A View to a Kill all that much.
Other thoughts:
- I’ll never forgive Skyfall for killing Judi Dench
- Though Ralph Fiennes is a kick-ass actor so I’m glad he was the one to replace M.
- I think Goldfinger, while good, is overrated.
- GoldenEye 007 was a very impressive and fun to play game for N64. To be expected. Rare software develops great games.
I think you’ve thought about this way too much
For me, Pierce Brosnan is and always will be James Bond. Everyone else is an impostor. GoldenEye is my favorite, which I’ve seen countless times. But I have seen most of the movies and for the most part I enjoy them. I don’t think I’ve thought enough about villains to decide who I like most or least, really.
Call me nitpicky, but you may want to put a spoiler warning in the thread title. Not everyone has seen all the Bond films to know who dies and where.
1. My favorite Bond is Roger Moore. Yeah, I know, he’s the most cartoony of the Bonds, but he’s also the one I grew up with, and even if he himself kind of hammed up the character the movies themselves actually got more realistic when he came along (Moonraker notwithstanding). I liked the cold-war espionage stuff more than the sci-fi and mustache-twiddling-villain shenanigans of the Connery era.
Least favorite is probably Timothy Dalton, though that’s not really his fault.
2. Christopher Walken as Zorin is also my favorite Bond villain. Whether the movie delivers is debatable (I think it does), but Walken definitely makes it worth watching. For all his other accolades, he doesn’t get nearly enough credit for being a suitably scary Bond villain. “Does anyone else wish to drop out?”
I’m not sure I have a least favorite villain, but I’ll say it was the North Koreans in Die Another Day, simply because that movie was beyond silly and utterly unnecessary.
3. My favorite opening might be Octopussy. The World Is Not Enough gets an honorable mention. That theme has grown on me the more I’ve listened to it. Least favorite might be Die Another Day though I don’t know that I’ve been particularly turned off by any opening or theme, and the opening of that one actually wasn’t bad.
4. My favorite all around Bond film is probably Octopussy, though A View to a Kill and Tomorrow Never Dies might trump it some days. Least favorite is easily Die Another Day.
I think you’ve thought about this way too much

Yeah, I probably have. But it occured to me I’ve never actually been able to “nerd out” to anyone about Bond films since my friends suck and don’t watch good stuff.
I think I’d place GoldenEye in the top 5 if not number 1, but I haven’t seen it in so long I hardly remember anything that happens.

I was actually thinking about that. Part of me thought “well, it’s a Bond thread. If for whatever reason you haven’t managed to see the Bond films by now you should assume there are spoilers” but it’s always courteous to do so anyway. Fixed.
I cannot give my least favorites because I’m such a big fan of the series.
1. Roger Moore is my favorite and he ended up making the most Bond movies out of all the actors who played the role which is testament to how much the public loved him during the 70’s – 80’s era.
2. Jaws is my favorite villain even though he isn’t technically the overseeing bad guy of the “The Spy Who Love Me”/”Moonraker” but rather a henchman.
3. Live and Let Die is my favorite Bond title song.
4. I’ll go with Goldfinger due to how it really paved the winning recipe for how a Bond movie should be made. Awesome production design for the Villain lair’s, excellent gadgets, beautiful babes, variety of country locations, remember able villains(aka Oddjob, Auric Goldfinger).

I think you mean developed. Rare is a deformed, hollowed out shell of what they once were.
Favorite Bond: Connery
Least Favorite Bond: Roger Moore. He was charming, but I just couldn’t buy him as a killer.
Favorite Villain: Telly Savalas in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. Twisted.Least Favorite Villain: Jonathan Pryce in “Tomorrow Never Dies”. Just an awful character.
Favorite Theme: Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, A View to a Kill
Least Favorite Theme: Diamonds are Forever, the Sam Smith song from “Spectre”
Favorite Bond movie: Goldfinger, Casino Royale, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Least Favorite: Diamonds are Forever, Tomorrow Never Dies, Die Another Day
Favorite “unofficial” Bond rip-off: Never Say Never Again
Favorite Bond movie fight: From Russia With Love
Favorite Bond girl: Carey Lowell in “License to Kill”
Favorite Bond: Connery (in the first three films)
Favorite Jason Bourne: Daniel Craig

Least Favorite Everything Else: “Die Another Day”
Favorite Pre-Title Sequence: “Tomorrow Never Dies”; I actually think this is the best 10 min of any Bond movie (although the opening for “Goldfinger” is a close second) Although Connery is my favorite Bond, I actually think Brosnan was best suited for the role. It’s a shame that the scripts undermined his performance with silly shit like speed boats driving in the street, Denise Richards, and Madonna.
Most Ridiculously out of place and by default, awesome character in a Bond film: tie between Wayne Newton in “LIcense to Kill”, and Officer J.W. Pepper in the Moore films.
I would have to say John Cleese as “R” or whatever they decided to name him. Sure, Bond has always had a hint of comedy like any good action series, but putting an actual comedian in charge of a very important division of MI6 made it more of a challenge to take those movies seriously… and that was challenging enough what with Denise Richards as a chemical engineer, Madonna as a sword fighter, and Bond’s increasingly middle-school-worthy puns.
But hey, you know, John Cleese. The more of him in any circumstance, the merrier.
I grew up with Pierce Brosnan’s Bond movies, but I still came around to watching the older ones, mostly Connery and Moore era stuff, but I still think of Brosnan as Bond, especially with how many video games came out around the time that used his likeness. Heck, even games that came out years after he hadn’t been in any Bond movies still used his appearance. Moore and Connery are tied at second for me, just because I think their movies are about equal in how great they are. Dalton didn’t really leave a huge impression on me, so I’d probably say that he’s my least favorite Bond.
Goldeneye hit the perfect mix, in my opinion, for what a Bond movie should be. A lot of it feels ahead of its time, cinematically, it’s hard to describe, but it feels more like a movie than the other Brosnan films. There’s just something intangible about it that makes me pop it in every so often. I can’t really say that I have a least favorite Bond movie, they’re obviously not cinematic masterpieces, but they’re all tons of fun to watch.
Brosnan did another film…The November Man I think it was called. It was pretty much like a non-Bond Bond film. So if you aren’t sick of him already there’s that one.
Denise Richards as a chemical engineer,
In the legendary annuls of eye rolling Bond lines, the “I thought Christmas only comes once a year” one is the eye rolling-est.

“Goldeneye” was very well directed. Famke Janseen’s character was also instantly memorable, and Brosnan was obviously good in the role. It was all downhill from there for Brosnan, IMO, though. He got stuck with some pretty lousy scripts after that.
