I’ve been using a pair of Sony headphones with extra bass for authoring the past months. These specifically:
However today on my way to the bus I unplugged them for a second to talk to someone and no more than 2 minutes later the right headphone had stopped working. I had them for 8 months.
I was thinking about getting these:
The 50x seemed a little too much and even with the 40x on sale I’m getting a new phone so I cannot afford to spend too much money. Opinions? Are there better cheaper options?
October 13, 2016 at 3:03 pm #476243These are the ones I use, and they work great, at least for me. They’re only €18, which is about $20.

I guess I should warn however, apparently some people have gotten bad headsets, either bad sound or really tight on the ears and had to go through the trouble of refund and buying a second one that then worked, maybe I was lucky and got a good one first try.
So I would suggest looking elsewhere and maybe saving this one as a last resort.
October 13, 2016 at 5:54 pm #476250It may be a bit too expensive for you, but it’s worth the money. https://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-XB600-Driver-Premium-Headphones/dp/B009A6CZYY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476381226&sr=8-1&keywords=MDR-XB600
That’s what I use for gaming and authoring; noise canceling is great, the headphones takes the shape of yours ears; so it’s comfy. Sound is great; better than my home theater system.
I don’t know about durability though, my headphones rarely exits this home; so there’s little chances for the to get crushed; and the wire do look about the same as your last headphones.
October 13, 2016 at 6:49 pm #476257I don’t know too much about headphones, but based on personal experience I can vouch for Audio-Technica headphones. I’ve been using the ATH-M50’s (I believe there was a sale on the older model soon before the M50x came out) for almost 3 years now and they’ve served me very well for pretty much every purpose, both at home and on the go. I believe there’s not very big of a gap between the M50x and the M40x, sound-wise, and though I don’t know as much about the M30x, I’d imagine you’d still get fairly similar quality.

October 14, 2016 at 12:14 am #476277I think any good-ish pair of over-ear stereo headphones will do the trick. What makes the difference is how you EQ the audio file to try and pull out what you want to hear.
Edit: I will say though that I also use ATH-M50s as Bearz mentioned he does. They are excellent quality.
October 14, 2016 at 1:02 am #476280I’ve been using my AKG K240 for authoring. I’ve had these headphones since the 90’s. I wouldn’t mind upgrading and spending a 100 or 200 dollars on something new and better. Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming.
October 14, 2016 at 2:46 am #476282I use Sennheiser HD 558’s, they’re $200 in Canada which means they’re likely much cheaper elsewhere. They’re good for the price and they allow me to hear everything that’s going on clearly (especially important for drums charting).
Also check out Beyerdynamic, these are cheaper and arguably better (closed instead of open, however).

October 14, 2016 at 3:24 am #476283So many brands, so hard to decide. I mean there would be no need to invest in an expensive pair if we always had multitrack audio but for mp3’s it seems a high quality headset could help tremendously.
