hello im the mac guy who wanted help recently, So ive gone through the head ache of boot camp (it didnt work for several attempts)
im set up got reaper and magma.
But im completely lost how to get started, i have looked at the set up guide but it just baffles me im sorry
i know alot of work has gone into the tutorials. But i see so much information and it just goes whoosh right over my head.
I have no idea what im doing, even if make custom songs for dummys existed it would still be too much for me atm lol.
i want to start authoring right from scratch which i know is the deep end for the likes of me who have never done it before. Basically if anyone can hold my hand a little to get me started id really appreciate it.
March 18, 2015 at 3:03 pm #440899My humble suggestion would be to re-read the docs and start from the beginning: Open REAPER, drag your MP3 in, follow the tempo mapping instructions VERY CLOSELY then start laying down gems in your instrument track, per the tutorials and docs. Follow the “backing-rendering” process, then the MAGMA process. If you get errors, try to understand what they’re telling you then search the forums before you post because you’re probably not the first to see them.
Pick an easy song, work on just one instrument, no overdrive, expert only, worry about hard/medium/easy later. Get that instrument working in game, then go back to REAPER for fixes, adding overdrive, reductions, other instruments, etc. The whole thing takes time but will get easier and quicker as time goes on. Have patience, think it through, take your time. Good luck. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
March 18, 2015 at 8:03 pm #440912The tricky thing about learning to author is that the first thing you need to do – tempo mapping – is one of the hardest. See if you can’t find something electronically produced to learn to author with, since it’ll likely have little to no tempo changes.

Like a lot of things, you need to be pretty self sufficient and a self-starter, because a “little bit of hand-holding” quickly turns into a lot of hand-holding, and that’s a big time investment.
Experiment. Experiment until it works. Search up errors and try to resolve them first based on the text instead of jumping to the relatively ‘common’ step of immediately copy-pasting entire error logs to the boards and hoping someone else will read it for you — Magma only rarely spits out something obscure or indecipherable, assuming you’ve read the docs or read the relevant section after seeing the error.
There is a lot of trial and error here, and as you fail and learn from it, you’ll get to the point where you’re only needing to ask for advice/guidance (instead of thinking that’s all your asking for). ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”>
My #1 recommendation, if you find tempo mapping overwhelming (since as Ganon notes it’s the ‘first’ thing you need to do — and to be frank, I still find it frustrating after a few years in the sandbox), is to find a song that you KNOW has a fixed BPM, and learn to author from that.
March 20, 2015 at 7:50 am #441043The documentation made my head hurt as hell, but I watched pksages’ tutorials and that’s how I’ve gotten started. I find it easier with a visual aid ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
