I’m looking to (finally) break into customs, and I have a couple questions.
1. How long should the silence be at the beginning of the song?
2. If the song has a steady beat, can I place one tempo marker at the beginning and leave it at that?
Thanks in advance.
1. It isn’t the time you want to look for with the silence before a song, it’s how many measures. You want the actual song to start at measure 3, or somewhere in measure 3 if your song starts mid-measure. You should also consider having a count-in in the first two measures instead of just silence.
2. Yes, you can have one tempo map at the beginning and keep it at that IF and only IF the song is either electronic or played on a click track (in other words, if the producer artificially adjusted the audio to remain on-beat on a static tempo).

1) That is 100% correct but I would add that for very fast songs you need to start at the 4, otherwise Magma will complain that notes start too soon (while the fretboard is still composing).
2) I’m stressing what GK said: IF the BPM is REALLY the same throughout. Be careful not to get lazy about that, as a rule of thumb you can get away with no more than a 15/20 BPM excursion, even less for slower tempos, any more than that and playing will feel off.
