Chart-a-thon Day 1: Kickoff!
Hello all and welcome to our third Chart-a-thon! Last year we had a fun 12 Days of
Chartmas event but we seem to be alternating between 12DoC and Chart-a-thon each year so
this means we’ve got our charity event this go-around!
What is Chart-a-thon?
Chart-a-thon is an event which, as you can probably guess in a rhythm gaming community,
focuses on the release of custom songs. From Monday, December 18th to Sunday, December
31st, authors from the rhythm gaming community will present a new release (singles, packs or
albums) two times a day!
How does it work?
As mentioned above, twice a day from December 18th to New Year’s Eve an author will release
customs for you to download and enjoy! As this is a charity event, for every song you download
we ask you to donate at least $1 USD to the cause. Of course, any additional donation is
incredibly appreciated! If you can donate, we’re infinitely grateful, and if you can’t
you are of course still free to download as many songs as you want. Every single donation will
help us reach a bigger goal and help people who need our support.
The two time slots for releases will be as follows:
Slot 1 – 5:00AM PST / 8:00AM EST / 2:00PM CET
Slot 2 – 5:00PM PST / 8:00PM EST / 2:00AM CET
What is the charity and how do I donate?
This year on suggestion of TrojanNemo we have chosen the National Down Syndrome Society
for the event at https://ndss.org/. We ask for each song you download you donate
$1 USD to the charity. Think of it as if you were going to purchase the song as DLC, but the money
goes directly to a good cause.
Roughly 1 in 1,000 babies are born with Down Syndrome. It’s likely you know someone who has
it. If so, you’re probably aware of how it affects their daily life and the lives of those who care
for them. While modern healthcare and science have improved the lives of those affected with
Down Syndrome, there is still no known cure or prevention of this disease and it can be a
struggle for those who live with it. However, as technology keeps advancing, we can continue
to further improve the lives of those affected, as we’ve already seen with declining death rates,
increased age expectancy, and a higher quality of life with increases to post-secondary
education and jobs, it shows that help can only get better, and we can help by donating to the
NDSS for their programs to help those affected.
Nemo’s been very active with a local Down Syndrome organization and has been involved with
them for over a decade. We decided to go with the larger national org for accessibility reasons
but if you’re interested in donating to the org that Nemo’s involved with you are more than
welcome to donate to their cause at https://dsaom.org/.
The following is extremely important: money goes directly to the charity’s platform without us
putting a finger on it. It is crucial to us as they have their own collection system and we are not
involved in any way in that part of the process. You don’t have to trust anybody else with your
money: we have no part in collecting donations at all. We are only here to raise awareness and
ask for your help. We know every dollar we donate goes toward a common goal and we look
forward to many donations.
Where can I view the content?
For each release of content we’ll be making a blog post here. As to where the songs themselves will be available, we are happy to announce that this year we’ll be hosting all Chart-a-thon content on the new
RhythmVerse site at https://rhythmverse.co/! As like last time, each post on RGW will have links to the
song entries on RhythmVerse but you can also visit RV directly to access content. If you don’t yet have a RhythmVerse account, it’s free to sign up! For more info on what RhythmVerse is, please visit the above link, or if you’d like an invite to the Discord server, please PM an RGW mod!
Okay, enough with the text wall. You want to see new content, right? Here we go for the kickoff for Chart-a-thon 2023!!!

Set It Off has a pretty lengthy discography at this point, but nothing hits quite as hard for me as the fourth song off their debut album, Plastic Promises. Fast staccato trumpet and layered harmonies give this song a frantic energy that sees you all the way to the big rock ending.

This non-album outtake managed to sneak its way onto various punk compilations and is considered a classic deep-cut within Minutemen’s discography. A great warmup song for your next Rock Band party!

Ballad of Big Nothing: A quintessential Elliott Smith song featuring his trademark blend of depressive yet elusive lyrics over an incredibly catchy and propulsive melody. Depending on your mood, “You can do what you want to whenever you want to” can either be a message of optimism or utter defeat. Thanks to Yaniv297 for Guitar and Vox, and expect more Elliott in the future!

Hey, Yaniv here! Can you feel it… there’s something in the air. A new Chart-a-thon is upon us, and a lot of fresh customs and great music are going to join your music library in the next weeks! I’ve worked a lot on some of the releases ahead and I’m happy to kick it off with a few singles.

So appropriately, let’s start with “Something in the Air”! This classic by Thunderclap Newman, a 70’s one-album band that didn’t really catch on as a whole, but this song has made it to number one in the UK and is a bit of a lost classic. It’s also featured in the (amazing, must-watch for any music fan) movie “Almost Famous”!

Sticking around in the 70’s, we also have the great “Box #10” from the magnificent singer-songwriter Jim Croce (of “Time in a Bottle”, famously used in “X-Men: Days of Future Past”).

We also have my absolute all time favorite, Neil Young – sadly no Neil pack this time around, but you still get the magnificent “Look Out for My Love”, an epic folky/country tune from his brilliant “Comes a Time” album.

On the more electric side of things, I also present “The Slider” from glam rock legends T. Rex in all it’s glorious groove

The end of the 70’s saw a new wave in music – the punk explosion is represented here with the Clash classic “Career Opportunities” from their debut album, lamenting the lack of jobs available for British youth…

…and new wave itself with Nick Lowe’s classic and catchy “Cruel to be Kind”.
We’re also happy to announce a new authoring group – AIRheads, with “AIR” standing for “Alternative Indie Rock”. We’re 7 authors dedicated to bringing more quality indie and alternative music for this community! You’re welcome to visit our page, where previous collaborations between our members were retroactively associated with this group. And expect A LOT of new material from us during this Chart-a-thon! So to kick it off, here’s 3 classic indie singles.

Starting from the legendary Pixies, one of the most influential bands on alternative rock. the classic “Caribou” from their classic “Come On Pilgrim” EP.

Next up, Morrissey – the frontman of the legendary Smiths – with one of his biggest solo hits, “Everyday is Like Sunday’.

And finally, Welsh cult heroes Super Furry Animals make their Rock Band debut with the catchy and upbeat “Do or Die”.
That ends this year’s kickoff event! Look forward to another two weeks of awesome content from amazing authors and don’t forget to please donate to the National Down Syndrome Society! After all, we’re not running a charity here! (NDSS is)
I’m a couple days late but just wanted to say, really looking forward to the Chat-a-Thon this year, and this kick-off was fantastic! Especially looking forward to those Thunderclap Newman, Elliott Smith, and Pixies tracks, but there’s a lot of good to be had here!
