Going back to my last thread about AC/DC not having much content in RB or even GH (thank you to everyone who commented, I remembered how AC/DC & other groups werent that keen on getting their stuff in for a DLC pack or even more than just a song on Disc). Comparing GH vs RB has been done for years & years but what about band representation? Rock Band had as far as I remember:
Enter Sandman – RB1
Battery – RB2
Metallica pack 01
Blackened, and Justice for All & Ride the Lightning
Comparing that to GH having a whole game based around Metallica (a fantastic game BTW) & singular tracks & packs as well being both on disc for a few GH games, there is no way to compare.
My actual question related to the topic is, how in the world did Guitar Hero manage to acquire Metallica for not only multiple tracks on their games, but also a whole game, but Rock Band couldnt even get more than 5 songs? Its actually baffling to me to see this put this way as I actually thought RB had way more Metallica than I found.
April 28, 2020 at 2:32 pm #511085That’s just how businesses work. Deals and negotiations. Same reason why RB has a whole Beatles game but no other rhythm game has a single Beatles track officially.
April 28, 2020 at 3:10 pm #511087Activision made a deal with Metallica for band exclusivity for the GH games, hence why Metallica songs in RB games didn’t export and the DLC license ran out quicker than a lot of other packs. It’s not the first or last time a company did it (ATVI also had Aerosmith, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Soundgarden whilst Harmonix had Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Who, Green Day and presumably others) but the dick move on ATVI’s part comes from how they renewed the license to last until 2024, preventing Metallica from ever coming to any rhythm music game (or possibly any video game at all) until that year.
The other main reason The Beatles are only in Rock Band is because they’re notoriously difficult to license due to how expensive the songs are in comparison to your garden variety Rock band. Harmonix would’ve saved some money by offering exclusivity and a band-centric game but that’s likely why we only got 3 DLC packs that expired without renewal and 0% content that exported to other games; it would’ve absolutely broken the bank.April 28, 2020 at 6:47 pm #511092I don’t know if you recall, but if I am not mistaken, you could only purchase the AC/DC track pack at Walmart in the USA. (I’m pretty sure I remember that right). Due to an exclusivity deal that was made.
it’s all about the almighty dollar.

https://kotaku.com/ac-dc-rock-band-is-wal-mart-exclusive-afterall-5057018
It was originally released exclusively at Wall-Mart and Sams club (owned by same company)
I am sure they trickled down everywhere after a week or so.

Huh, that explains why I always saw nearly 20 unopened copies of the PS2 version on the clearance racks in almost every Walmart I’ve been to.

Some of these songs are incredibly expensive to licence, and Activision had the money to do it.

Wait a second, 2024? ATVI’s sucks! Why did they make such a long contract like that one? GH is dead since 2011 (Live isn’t a GH game for me), the DLC’s has all got pulled out from stores and even so Activision holds Metallica

Money is the big one yes, but when you’re dealing with Artists, especially Artists with Integrity, the process becomes even more complex. Harmonix may not have had more money than Activision, and Seven45 Studios sure as hell didn’t have more money, but they both still got exclusive big names like the Beatles and Eric Clapton, because of what they had to offer to those artists (or they lied through their teeth, in Seven45’s case).

That’s just how contracts work. They’ll add a date that’s as far into the future as they think they can get away with for the money involved, and then worry later about whether they’ll actually have anything around at that point. It’s entirely possible Activision thought the GH gravy train would last longer. Lord knows they wanted it to.
May 2, 2020 at 4:02 pm #511171Well, one thing’s for certain. Eventually, when the date does reach 2024, we celebrate.
