First, thank you to everyone doing this. What an awesome site! I’d love to learn to make my own songs, maybe 1 day I’ll understand lol. As a real drummer, I got bored playing on RB drums ( even with the cymbals ). So I took an old kit and went to town with it. Converted it to electronic and used my old electronic cymbals. Right away, it was a lot more fun but being a real drummer, I still struggled with a few notes. The open HH on the ride was messing me up and the yellow as a crash. So I added more to my kit. Added 2 more cymbals for yellow crash and added a ride next to my HH for the open notes and for fun added a rim shot lol.

So now the experience is absolutely amazing. We all play as a group ( drums, guitar, bass, keyboard, singer(s) and this drum kit feels ” real “. So thought I’d share. Again, love what everyone is doing here. Let’s hope I learn to make songs. dpL7aNt.jpg

Love this set up! I’d totally do this given the resources. It looks like it would be a blast. The rim registers on my e-kit without having to separate it so I just play on the rim (stick laid across the snare and all) when the song calls for it (see Natalie Merchant’s Wonder for a good rim playing song). And when it clicks along on the kit just like in the song, it’s truly magical.

First of all, congrats for the great setup!

I just asked about the open hihat in the other thread because I didn’t see this one first but now I see that you have a small extra “blue” cymbal next to the hihat for that. It’s a shame that RB can in fact recognize open hihats but doesn’t have an option for triggering blue notes with them, it came so close…

I’ve had the Ion set since they came out and love them, and don’t understand how anyone can have fun on the original toy set.

You must absolutely love combining the real thumping sound with your toms and bass drum. I’m jealous!!

Thanks. Sorry for the late reply. The kit has been apart since this post for renovations but it’s back up. That little TV was temporarily lol. I play with a projector on 104″. I’ve added another cymbal to the left to act as ” green ” and actually wrapped my cymbals in a dark camo pattern. I will take pics and yes, I’ll also do a video soon. Thanks again for all the hard work you guys put into making the songs.

the rb drums can’t do this of course but ekits can. program the hi hat controller so down is yellow and up is blue. i’ve done this but there are very little songs where it’s open long enough for the change in note. i have a dtx kit and i have shortest setting for the hi hat controller for open. it’s one of those real hi hat stands. but for quick opens still doesn’t do it fast enough. been thinking of getting just the pedal to see if there is any difference though.

This of course works in rb3 but not in rb4. they changed the hi hat pedal settings. last i checked i had to unplug the controller cable i think or something like that….

Well my eKit is so basic it’s not programmable i.e. I cannot change the midi event triggered by an open hihat. But at least all other events are standard and work in the game.

But I don’t understand the rest of your post. Do you mean that songs are so fast that opening the hihat with the pedal and then hitting doesn’t send an open hihat note but a closed hihat note?

sorry i should have said my ekit or some ekits are programmable and can do these things. and yes for your second part. not necessarily the song is too fast cause i play some slower ones but yes it doesn’t switch to blue in time so it’s still a yellow hit.

mine is a real working hi hat stand with the cymbal on top with like a sensor in the ring of the cymbal. works with pressure i think. so maybe i have to work with the height of the open hat or something but just a pedal might work better for the degrees of open and close….where is mine has to sense being off the stand ring…

personally i preferred gh open hats where they were a pause. only song on rb that does this is black hole sun – by soundgarden to my knowledge. the gaps are so big and perhaps cause it’s the first game in the series that’s how they were doing them back then. then someone come up with the idea of charting them blue. but nobody really makes the gap by taking a yellow out. so that’s why i can’t open and close it quick enough…so like the pic up top i have a blue beside my hi hate for open….works but you won’t train your left leg timing but again this is a game that’s not perfect…

I will try that with my pedal and see if it works. And since I played drums for many years before RB, it’s automatic muscle memory for my foot to lift for open hi hat lol

good stuff. what kit do you have ? i think the standard notes work with the adapter so even if you can’t reprogram it could work perhaps. also for the foot thing i was referring to keeping time with it more than just opening it occasional for the blue. while doing like a tom groove or hitting the ride. i’m not the best at that but no song really does that to my knowledge a few do with a yellow showing up during snare rolls etc. i saw another post about a hi hat pattern with snares with the hi hat. it’s either error a drum machine or probably the foot pedal….
