Heres a fun discussion, what covers do you feel are better much better than the original?
For me I say
Soul Man by Blues Brothers is better than Sam & Dave just from the upbeat nature of the cover although the Sam & Dave original is still very very good.
Curious what yall think!

December 9, 2019 at 5:17 am #508217Ok so I have a long list, there are probably some I am forgetting but here is every song I prefer the cover to (original artist will be in parenthesizes after it)
NOTE: All my opinion, also there are some covers that I like still (example Take on Me – Reel Big Fish [a-ha]) that I enjoy but not more than the original, so they won’t be in the list. I also know some of these covers are probably worse musically but they speak to my music tastes more.
Smooth Criminal – Alien Ant Farm (Michael Jackson)
I Fought The Law – The Clash (Sonny Curtis)
We’ve Gotta Get Out Of This Place – The Angels (The Animals)
1985 – Bowling For Soup (SR-71)
Hurt – Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails)
Wake Me Up – Dirty Loops (Avicii)
Rolling In The Deep – Dirty Loops (Adele)
Life Is A HIghway – Rascal Flatts (Tom Cochrane)
Stomp The Tumbarumba – Hoodoo Gurus (Johnny Devlin)
Want You Gone – Johnathan Coulton ft. the Elegant Too (GlaDos [technically it is the same artist but it also really isn’t])
Ring Of Fire – Dragonforce (Johnny Cash)Mrs Robinson – The Lemonheads (Simon and Garfunkel)
Tainted Love – Soft Cell (Gloria Jones)
Tainted Love – Marilyn Manson (Gloria Jones)
It’s My Life – No Doubt (Talk Talk)
Boys Of Summer – The Ataris (Don Henley)
Funky Town – Pseudo Echo (Lips Inc)
Come On Eileen – Save Ferris (Dexy’s Midnight Runners)
Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby – Smash Mouth (The Four Seasons)
Why Can’t We Be Friends – Smash Mouth (WAR)
I’m A Believer – Smash Mouth (The Monkees)
Black Betty – Spiderbait (Ram Jam)
Istanbul (Not Constantinople) – They Might Be Giants (The Four Lads)
Dancing In The Moonlight – Toploader (King Harvest)
Cats In The Cradle – Ugly Kid Joe (Harry Chapmin)
Wenn dein Herz zu schlgen aufhört (When Your Heart Stops Beating) – Wir Sind Helden (+44)there is probably a bunch that I am missing, but here is my list I can immediately think of
If you use Pro Keys 2 Hands, you a cheater, just saying
December 9, 2019 at 6:00 am #508219I’m going to agree with the mention of the Hurt cover. Badass rendition.
December 9, 2019 at 6:16 am #508220I know people will hate me for this, but invariably I like every cover of Elvis Presley better than the original, even those by ZZTop and Pet Shop Boys
December 9, 2019 at 9:28 am #508221The Killers cover of Ultraviolet (Light my way), the original by U2 can’t even compare to that one…
December 9, 2019 at 4:17 pm #508227This thread scares me a little but I’ll keep an eye on it to say “no you’re wrong I don’t agree with your musical tastes not matching my own” once in a while. Starting here:
We’ve Gotta Get Out Of This Place – The Angels (The Animals)
Hurt – Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails)
Mrs Robinson – The Lemonheads (Simon and Garfunkel)
It’s My Life – No Doubt (Talk Talk)
Cats In The Cradle – Ugly Kid Joe (Harry Chapmin)100% gotta disagree on these. Though the Johnny Cash one I wouldn’t say is not as good. On the contrary I think it’s excellent and it compliments the NIN version very well. Same with his “Rusty Cage” cover. Definitely a different take on both those songs. Also with that being said i definitely agree with the Smash Mouth so we cool there. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
I can’t think of any myself except for the obvious ones like “Cum on Feel the Noize” and others that are more popular than the original artist. I’ll have to think about it.
December 9, 2019 at 5:48 pm #508232Led Zeppelin – half of their discography
December 9, 2019 at 6:21 pm #508233My Heart Will Go On – DragonForce (Celine Dion)
Hangover – Alestorm (Taio Cruz)
Transdermal Celebration – Devin Townsend Project (Ween)
Next to You – The Offspring (The Police)
December 9, 2019 at 7:21 pm #508236All the covers that The Beatles did
December 9, 2019 at 7:31 pm #508237I can think of a ton of covers that I like better than the originals, but a recent conversation got me thinking and made me realize, I can’t think of a single cover I like better where I heard the cover after hearing the original. I wonder how many other people are in the same boat?
PikedPike covered several that would be on my list. Here are some others:
“Jesus Is Just Alright” by the Doobie Brothers, originally by the Byrds.
“Blinded by the Light” by Manfred Mann, originally by Bruce Springsteen.
“Everytime You Go Away” by Paul Young, originally by Hall & Oates.
“Go West” by the Pet Shop Boys, originally by the Village People.
“Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes, originally by Jackie DeShannon.
“Wind beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler, originally by Roger Whittaker and covered several times before Midler ran with it.
“Don’t Turn Around” by Ace of Base, originally by Tina Turner and again covered several times before Ace of Base made it big.
For all of these, I heard the cover first. I think the best I can claim where I heard a cover second is that I like the original and the cover more or less equally, such as with “Don’t Be Cruel”, first by Elvis and then later by Cheap Trick.
December 10, 2019 at 1:35 am #508244I love the Killers cover of Romeo and Juliet even more than the original Dire Straits version. Sorry, Mark.
And to incite the Dead Heads in our midst… Counting Crows befriending the devil.
And obviously this PUSA classic, which is even in the database!
And, finally, my personal favorite! Hard-Fi’s take on Toxic by Britney Spears, with a little of the Clash’s version of Brand New Cadillac thrown in…
December 10, 2019 at 4:12 am #508251So so many more, but the ones that pop immediately to mind…
Mad World – Gary Jules (Tears for Fears)
Such Great Heights – Iron and Wine (The Postal Service)
I Will Always Love You – Whitney Houston (Dolly Parton)
Respect – Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding)
Ray of Light – Madonna (Curtiss Maldoon)
