“Let’s hope this one turns out pretty darn good, huh?”Recorded in seven takes, it’s one of the most frantic rockers in the entire Beatles’ catalog. McCartney claimed that the song and vocal style were influenced by Little Richard, “I used to sing his stuff but there came a point when I wanted one of my own.” As the song concludes he can be heard repeating the phrase “Plastic soul, man, plastic soul” which was later adapted for the album Rubber Soul, was actually a phrase used by black musicians to describe Mick Jagger.“I’m Down” was used to close concerts in their final year as a live act, and was Paul’s opening number for his set at The Concert for New York City following the September 11 attacks.

“I need a fix ’cause I’m going down”
“Happiness” is a miniature history of rock and roll, a three-part structure that Lennon described as “the Dirty Old Man”, “the Junkie” and “the Gunman”. Now masters of studio production, the composition contained several changes in time signature, its subject was lyrically playful with half-baked poeticism and interjections of “Bang bang shoot shoot”.1968’s May issue of the NRA’s monthly magazine National Rifleman may have inspired the title, but consider the tragic irony of John Lennon having written a song titled “Happiness is a Warm Gun” and then, following his fatal shooting in December 1980, becoming the ‘most high profile’ of the many musicians who have died as a result of the wide availability of guns in the United States.Special thanks to DoNotPassGo.

“We got the feelin’ now!”What could have easily been generic ‘Beatlemania’ filler for Green’s debut album is instead turned into a two-minute bottle-rocket soul recording — an Al Green recording. “Shut up, Al Green” says a voice from the control room, but Green is already in full flight, delivering a rendition that is somewhere between Little Richard and James Brown, and goes far beyond hand-holding.

Going all the way back to 1970, this is a lovely tune from McCartney’s debut album, whose release pretty much led to the official announcement that the Beatles broke up. It was actually briefly rehearsed by the Beatles for the “Let it Be” sessions – with John playing a slide guitar that wasn’t included in the final solo version. It’s another lovely acoustic love song, this time with full band and some tricky instrumental parts. Another great classic by McCartney.

“Ho, Hey Ho!”While “Vandebilt” was being recorded in Lagos, Nigeria, the studio suffered a power outage but recording continued on a backup generator. McCartney wanted to record this record in an exotic locale, which did not sit well with guitarist Henry McCullough and drummer Denny Selwell, who quit the group before departure. With no time to recruit replacements, he entered the studio only with his wife Linda and multi-instrumentalist Denny Laine.Charlie Chester of the English Music Hall fame provided the opening line from his catchphrase “Down in the jungle, living in a tent, better than a bungalow, no rent!” The forced laughter that closed the track was recorded in London’s AIR studios upon their return. “It was great listening to a roomful of people laughing in stereo. They were getting into all these laughing bits, and we were on the floor.”

“People say I’m crazy.”
“Wheels” was released four months after singer John Lennon’s murder in December 1980, the third and final single from Lennon and Ono’s album Double Fantasy. In the song he addresses all those people who were confounded by his ‘house-husband’ years, 1975-1980, during which he retired from the music industry to concentrate on raising his son, Sean. In the 70’s it was commonplace for an artist to release an album every single year, extended spells away from the spotlight were considered unusual.
John recalled “I hadn’t stopped from ’62 till ’73 – on demand, on schedule, continuously. And walking away was hard. What it seemed like to me was, This must be what guys go through at sixty-five when suddenly they’re not supposed to exist any more and they are sent out of the office. I thought, Well, oughtn’t I? Shouldn’t I?”The song began life as a demo titled “Emotional Wreck” which was recorded in 1977, and featured both the main piano riff and the opening lines, and after a few dozen revisions, “Wheels” eventually emerged. The song features a unique instrument called a hammered dulcimer, which accompanies the lead piano.

“You were the one who imagined it all.”
Originally written to feature Ringo Starr on lead vocals, only to be turned down because he felt the vocal was too high for his range, George decided to take the track back and rework it.Al Kooper provided an eye-witness account of George’s reaction to hearing the news that his friend had been shot: “George was in the kitchen, white as a sheet, real shook up. We all had breakfast. He took calls from Paul and Yoko, which actually seemed to help his spirit, and then we went into the studio and started the day’s work. Ray and I kept George’s wine glass full all day…”“Years” was eventually recorded in early 1981, shortly after the death of his former band-mate; the the song was eventually tailored to serve as a personal tribute. Featuring Ringo on drums, and Paul, Linda, and Wings band-mate Denny Laine preforming backing vocals, it was the closest thing to a band reunion that the public would get for many years, being one of a small handful songs to feature only three members of the band.

“I can feel you there.”
Julian was the direct inspiration for three Beatles’ songs: “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” (1967), “Hey Jude” (1968), and “Good Night” (1968). At age five, his parents had divorced over John’s infidelity with Japanese artist Yoko Ono, and McCartney wrote “Jude” to console him (originally titled “Hey Jules”). After a short absence in his life, his father John returned with a gift of a Les Paul guitar and encouraged his son’s interest in music.Julian recalled in 2010, “When I saw how he had given up music for a couple of years to look after Sean, that was hurtful. I thought, why didn’t he do that for me? In retrospect, one looks back and sees what duress he was actually under at the time. When the Beatles hit, they hit as big as it got. He couldn’t have stopped even if he’d wanted to; so you have to let go and say I get it, I understand.”Completed during a three-month long excursion at the Manoir de Valotte in Saint-Benin-d’Azy, France, “Valotte” was destined to be Julian’s first single in the United States in September 1984, followed by “Too Late for Goodbyes”.

The title track to Paul McCartney 1993’s album, a nice, melodic, rocking tune. The guitar chart is very interesting, with 2 solos and a lot of leads and licks spread all through the song. There’s also some really nice 3-part harmonies. Great song and a classic opener to a great album.

I prefer this version so much more than the official White Album version of the song which feels over-produced to me. This version also does not contain John Lennon screaming “KNOW…” as it does on the White Album version (which I HATED and RUINS the song for me — See, I can scream too.) Hope you enjoy!”

yaniv297 writes “Taken from 2007’s “Memory Almost Full”, “Mr. Bellamy” tells the story of a gentleman standing on top of a building and threatening to jump. A curious, jumpy and fun song, it’s a favorite of many, and absolutely great to play in Rock Band.
Fun fact: McCartney invited Thom Yorke of Radiohead to play on this tune, but Yorke declined; he said he “really liked it”, but feared he’s simply not good enough at piano to play the required part (“the piano playing involved two hands doing things separately. I don’t have that skill available”, according to Yorke).”

In 2014 Les Claypool and his band Primus toured extensively with The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, featuring lead singer Sean Lennon, the pair kept in touch afterwards. Knowing that Primus would take a year off, they started working on an old-school, psychadelic and progressive rock record and over the course of six short weeks they wrote and recorded ten songs, both artists sharing vocal and instrumental responsibilities, beyond their core abilities of bass and guitar.The successful formula was repeated in 2017, with an EP of cover songs from Pink Floyd, The Who, and King Crimson, and again in 2019 with South of Reality.“Blood and Rockets: Movement I, Saga of Jack Parsons” recalls the fate of the late rocket scientist and inventor, who later became the founder of JP Laboratories and was later persecuted for his occult worship.

I very carefully went through a list of the top 100 Beatles cover versions — that is where I stumbled across the Al Green cover. Do NOT miss that one, its very special. I was tempted to do Aerosmith’s version of “I’m Down” when I realized nobody had done the original, so you might expect to see that one later in the year.

Just a disclaimer, the video previews shows a few mistakes that were fixed later:
