[POLL] What drum mix events DO YOU use?

      hey guys.

      working on an update to Magma that will, among other things, include suggested drum mix events based on your audio selection and allow you to copy it to your clipboard so you can just paste it in Reaper.

       

      so Magma has the following drop down options

       

      Kit

      Kit & Snare

      Kit & Kick

      Kit, Kick & Snare

       

      most of us use Kit exclusively, since you either have no multitracks, which means you use a blank stereo file for Kit, or you have regular stems, which means you have only one stem for the whole drum sound.

       

      when doing conversions from GH games we have access to the kit, kick and snare stems, so we also tend to use that option.

       

      but who uses Kick and Snare? this is documented in the RBN docs but can’t imagine a use for it.

       

      more importantly, who uses Kit & Snare?! – this is NOT even documented in the RBN docs.

       

      I’m looking to eliminate Kick & Snare and Kit & Snare if nobody’s going to use them.

       

      so go ahead, vote up there which ones you’ve used, select all that apply. If you’ve used Kit & Snare or Kick & Snare I’d love to hear in what situation.

        I only picked K/K/S because of the RBN song I authored.

         

        Otherwise, I can only dream of multitracks – it’s all been Kit for all my customs.

        Do you have to eliminate any of them? I can agree that I’ve never used kick and snare, but now that I said that, I’ll probably find stems set up that way. I think you should keep them unless removing them is absolutely necessary.

          It shouldn’t have to become a norm to abandon the other drum mixes.

           

          As a matter of fact, in the early days of RBN, I was auditioning a song with just kick and snare.

            I don’t have to, I thought it would be useful to remove things we don’t ever use.

            how? as I said in the OP, there is no documentation on how to set up that mix. if there is a way, I would like to know to have in Magma and to add to the RBN Docs.

              I take back what I said about both points.

               

              One thing, though…

              Kit & Snare

              This probably never existed in the first place as a drum mix because it was never needed when others would take its place.

               

              Bluzer did some research and found out that The Konks’ “29 Fingers” used drum mix 1 for this (mono kick, mono snare, stereo kit), even though there is no kick stem.

               

              So while we are allowed to use any drum mix as long as they cooperate with an audio track’s existing match of channels, it doesn’t mean that said audio track is needed to use said drum mix if there isn’t one.

               

              We just comply with the same drum mixes as usual.

               

              Magma might not give us that freedom, at the moment. But you can fix that, right? <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />

                Actually I can’t. That’s done by magmacompiler and we have no way to rewrite that code. All we can do is hack it. In this case to make it compile even if it has the wrong amount of channels rather than throw an error. But what do you think will happen when the game starts to load the audio and the channels are wrong?

                  Theoretically, the channels would be assigned to a different part of the band. Otherwise, they’ll never play at all.

                   

                  If the audio channels are handled by the MOGG header, we’re out of luck. But if that can be cheated with the edit of the songs.dta file, then we’ve got a workaround.

                   

                  Unless the MOGG encryption doesn’t stretch to such a boundary, freezing and crashing is also a possibility.

                    Yeah that was a rhetorical question. The game will crash. The channels are determined by a combination of songs.dta and the drum mix themselves. In the songs.dta you specify how many channels go to the drums…the drum mix events determine which drum channel goes to each drum part. So even if we mess with the channels in Magma we still have to use the approved mix events that the game will interpret correctly…making any funny channel business in magma useless.
