I start one of these in the General Discussion board of every forum I’m on.
My current “new hotnesses” are Dominant Species, Eclipse (though that’s more like “nine month old hotness”), and Agents of SMERSH. I Kickstarted a lot of interesting titles, and I’ve got a pretty big stable of titles, but I’m always on the lookout to hear what other people like to play. What sorts of games (if any) are you folks playing, and which ones did you really like?
May 20, 2013 at 3:38 pm #399882We NEED to have a Rock Band themed super unofficial card game!
May 20, 2013 at 4:14 pm #399885Way ahead of you
May 20, 2013 at 6:46 pm #399889My Sunday night gaming group has played all of those, which are each good picks. Our host Kickstarts a lot of “boutique” games, as well. We played Agents of SMERSH wrong our first time, though, making it too easy to win, but we’re eager to try again.
Other fallbacks that we tend to rely upon are Shadows Over Camelot, Lords of Waterdeep, and 7 Wonders. We usually have 6-8 people attending, so games that can scale to large groups are handy.
For less players, Discworld: Ankh-Morpork was pretty good on our first play. Even the Pratchett-ignorant players had fun.
For the particularly masochistic, we’ve even endured Here I Stand: Wars of the Reformation 1517-1555! ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
May 20, 2013 at 7:06 pm #399891We’ve played Shadows Over Camelot a few times, and it really does nothing for me haha. I think Battlestar Galactica runs the cooperative-with-a-traitor mechanic better, but I’m not a big fan of it either. We won our first round of SMERSH quite decisively, lost the second one on the last possible turn (the last guy rolling took a ton of injuries and drew a +2 villain advancement, though he passed the encounter and we would have won the game), and then have gotten absolutely RNG destroyed in the last three attempts.
I also Kickstarted Zpocalypse… haven’t gotten a chance to break it out but I’m kind of regretting that one.
May 21, 2013 at 3:55 pm #399928Yeah, Shadows kind of sucks. I hear the expansions make it better?
I own every Dominion expansion and promo, but I hardly play it anymore. Go figure. I wouldn’t mind getting Quarriors; rolling tons of dice is a good time.
If you want a fairly casual game for your non-gaming friends that’s still rewarding to play effectively, get Bohnanza.
May 21, 2013 at 4:02 pm #399929I actually got Dark Ages about a month ago, around the time I picked up Dominant Species and a few other expansions. Haven’t played any but core/Intrigue/Alchemy, though.
May 21, 2013 at 4:37 pm #399932Yeah, Shadows kind of sucks. I hear the expansions make it better? The thing that we revile about Shadows is the Grail quest: it’s fitting that you put ‘Despair’ cards on it, as it’s truly a soul-sucking slog!
But I think we’ve had enough down-to-the-wire close call rounds of it that it comes off pretty well in our (large) group for the most part. Perhaps we’re playing it subtly wrong in a manner that makes it slightly more fun? ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif” /> (no expansions, either)
Haven’t played Galactica yet to compare the traitor mechanic, though. It was on the docket for our “mini-con” (where we game from Thurs-Sun), but we wound up choosing something else to fit the number of players available. Too many games on the shelf, not enough weekends!
