I know it doesn’t seem like such a big deal, but if we strive for perfection, then I believe this is something that needs addressed.
With the number of customs we create and will create in the future, it’s worth noting that when people create theses, that album art images will vary. More specifically, if you have 2 customs with different contributing creators and they used different album art pictures, it can look unprofessional. One may be darker than the other, or one may appear zoomed-in more, or even pixelated.
This is why I believe when we release customs here, whatever the album art is, should be uploaded to a dedicated site and used by anyone who charts other songs from the same album. This way, it looks polished when it’s completed and art doesn’t look terrible. Id suggest people searching for the album name and if it’s there to simply use the picture that’s there. If it’s not, make your own, and then have it uploaded when the custom is completed.
Thoughts?
May 4, 2013 at 6:34 pm #399204Nemo already does a huge amount of work to take care of consistency for our songs. This collective was born with the idea of unifying the whole customs scene, but we are a few steps away from album art consistency. We still need to get to the point where all authors come together under one umbrella for authoring, and we need all resources available to get there (that’s why we reaching out to authors, we are working on things give a single point of reference to users and authors, etc.). Once we have that kind of collective, I think your idea is excellent, but we need to get there first, and any help is appreciated. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”>
May 4, 2013 at 7:39 pm #399210i am totally an album art nazi, hence my creation of the album art converter…i may work on that some more in the future to tie in to something like this.
anything that comes through C3 I will make sure it matches existing album art…but beyond that I have no control!
but I’d love to get feedback of any existing C3 release with official counterparts that our album art doesn’t match so it can be updated.
May 8, 2013 at 5:47 am #399357An easy way to keep it unified is to use the album art supplied on wikipedia.
May 8, 2013 at 11:20 am #399375We could make a spreadsheet with links to the “standard” album art photos. If we really wanted to be consistent, we could require that the only album art linked in the spreadsheet be art that has run through Magma, so everything is the same size and format.
May 8, 2013 at 2:50 pm #399387Or you can do what I do, and work on stuff so esoteric there isn’t a chance of collision in the first place! ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif” />
(I vote spreadsheet/database; Wikipedia artwork can sometimes be lower quality than Discogs or elsewhere. And of course, if an album already exists in RB, that artwork should take precedence, regardless of what’s on Wiki.)
May 8, 2013 at 5:45 pm #399396For official content, are the pics in the song database on RockBand.com the same exact images used in the game? That could be a good centralized source to start with.
Of course, even with official HMX content, the album art has not always been consistent. Queens Of The Stone Age “Songs For The Deaf” album for example — I was annoyed to find that the album art for “Go With the Flow” (RB1 DLC) did not match that of “No One Knows” (RB3 disc).
May 8, 2013 at 6:10 pm #399398There’s also something similar with the Alien Ant Farm DLC not matching the RBN tracks; that’s more a case of RBN author fucking up though.
I personally don’t think it’s such a big deal in official instances, though, because it’s a bit of goofy different.
Likewise, I would want the official Metallica DLC to be different from the GH:M one, to differentiate that they are “from” different “sources”, I suppose. (I can’t remember the one I’m thinking of of but you know the one.)

I think the Black Tide songs were subtly different, too.
But RB.com does artwork by album, which is why there’s an Iron Maiden song with Steve Miller artwork (same album names). That does offer an ‘official’ artwork for the album, but there’s no guarantee of a match with the songs themselves in-game.
