I recently learned that you can now renew your US passport online. But I need a proper digital photo. I want to take it at home, without going to a studio, but I’m not sure what parameters are important. I heard that there are strict rules about the size, file size and background. Has anyone taken a digital passport photo at home? How can I make sure the file won’t be rejected when uploading to MyTravelGov?

Yes, I recently took digital passport photo at home. The first thing to understand is what is a digital passport photo. Here https://digital-passport-photo.com a detailed guide and templates to avoid errors when uploading online. It is a square image 600×600 pixels, JPEG format, no larger than 240 KB, the head takes up 50-69% of the frame, the eyes are about 60% of the height. I put the phone on a tripod, used two soft lights at a 45° angle, a white wall as a background. The face is without glasses, the expression is neutral, the lips are closed. I took several photos, then cropped and checked the sizes in the editor, exported with the required compression. I recommend going through all the steps, otherwise the portal may reject the photo.

It is important to strictly follow all the requirements: size, file weight and background. Personally, I used white wall and a regular lamp, then checked the photo on the site, and everything went smoothly. The main thing is the head in the center and the eyes at the right height. Many people make mistakes with filters or glasses, so be careful.
