DZ Deathrays off-kilter approach to punk rock is compelling and then some. Volatile, unrestrained, blaring and abrasive guitar hooks played at maximum volume, however they do not take themselves too seriously. “Gina Works at Hearts” is the perfect example of what makes the band so irresistibly thrilling to listen to. DZ Deathrays began as a house-party band, and according to singer Shane Parsons the “will probably finish there too.” Their 2014 album and opening track “Black Rat” is a jagged burst of energetic punk-rock that pulls no punches.
If you have never heard of them (Hello Australian dance-punk fans) then I guess I would compare them to Canada’s Death From Above 1979. I first heard them on the 2015 Triple-J Hot 100 list with “Gina Works at Hearts” and I was instantly hooked. I might also chart “Reflective Skull” from this same album one day.
Enjoy! No idea what’s coming next, it could be anything.
As I already said man, very awesome to see some DZ Deathrays on here! If you like their stuff I should also recommend looking at Violent Soho and Dune Rats, both are Australian punk bands who are all from the same area in Brisbane, Australia and are all friends.
I also linked your Gina works at Hearts chart to their Facebook page and I got a reply back saying they thought the whole thing was rad
Sorry for the bump but a massive +1 to any Childish Gambino. The new album would lend itself to RB really well but I’d be happy with anything from Childish really
March 20, 2017 at 1:53 pm in reply to: Using a Big rock ending as a sort of freestyle in the middle of a song? #482956In theory it actually could* work…. but it wouldn’t work like you think it would. Also, it may not work if there is any actual hardcoded triggers for duration after.
Basically, in theory, all a BRE required is the coda text event, and then at least 1 note after on all difficulties to “hit” the BRE.
Assuming there is no limit to the number or notes after a BRE or a duration after a BRE…… you could put a BRE in the middle. However….. after the BRE the rest of the song would act like the few notes after the song. If the player misses ANY notes until the end of the song, they’d lose the BRE bonus. Also, I believe the BRE Score Overlay thing would stay up on the screen for the rest of the song.
I’m not even sure how scoring works after a BRE. If it’s normal, then it could still work. Would be fun to have someone build a quick RPP and try ha
The Plot thickens.
It actually turns out that the same thing happens later in the song, so there’d have to be another BRE as well if I wanted to try it, does that change this slim chance to a none? haha
March 20, 2017 at 9:50 am in reply to: Using a Big rock ending as a sort of freestyle in the middle of a song? #482950In all my years of playing Rock Band, not once have I seen a BRE in the middle of the song. You say the part is at the two minute mark, but I checked and the song was four and a half minutes. So I will say no. Take the time to author that part or get help from another author.
I probably didn’t explain myself properly. What I meant was that I wanted to know if it was possible to chart a BRE on only Keys at approx 2:00 to 2:20 and then continue the song on keys after that, so it would kinda play similar to the fill drummers do when deploying overdrive on drums. I think I’ll just resort to charting it myself because I’m guessing its just not possible.
The Art of Life custom on pro keys has multiple parts like that in the long piano solo. Although, the notes still roughly match keys being hit on piano, it’s just that those parts are completely atonal and trying to accurately chart the specific notes on pro keys would’ve been nearly impossible.
Yeah thanks man, that’s what I’ve ended up doing on regular keys
March 20, 2017 at 8:35 am in reply to: Using a Big rock ending as a sort of freestyle in the middle of a song? #482946I don’t know if 5 lane keys supports this, but on pro keys I’m pretty sure you can chart notes as glissandos if the track is all over the place and just playing random things off time.
Is there a song that has that? Just curious to see what it looks like
March 20, 2017 at 8:22 am in reply to: Using a Big rock ending as a sort of freestyle in the middle of a song? #482944I never thought of trying to use a BRE say in the middle of a song. Does Magma even allow it to happen? You would never see this in an official DLC song but this is custom land so why not.
I’m not too familiar with the ins and outs of creating customs as I’ve only done 4 songs, but I’ll have a play and see what happens. At least its not a hard ‘no’.
December 8, 2016 at 3:09 am in reply to: Best Websites for picking up an RB3 Guitar in New/Good 2nd Hand condition? #478555Well as as mentioned gumtree, but also try online stores that can post out.
here are some suggestions.
http://www.gamesmen.com.au (I got my midi pro adapter from them. this was the only place I could find locally to stock new items.)
cashies, both in store, if you have a local one and online webshop.cashconverters.com.au
Donation stores like Good Sammies, Salvos etc
Do you know anyone who can pick up a gumtree item and mail or deliver it to you ?
Also I also search for “guitar hero” or “guitar band” as “rock band” does not yield as many results.
Also this list might help looking for instruments. http://rockband.wikia.com/wiki/Controller_compatibility
Good luck.
Thanks heaps.
Yeah I’ve been checking gumtree routinely, and depending on the location of the item I could get people to ship them to me, so it’s always an option. I’ve checked The Gamesmen quite a few times as well, but they seem to only stock the Pro Guitar and Rock Band 4 items, unfortunately.
I decided to open up my guitar today and do a few fixes to keep it going, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout
December 5, 2016 at 11:08 am in reply to: Best Websites for picking up an RB3 Guitar in New/Good 2nd Hand condition? #478452I found my John Lennon Gretch on local ads gumtree for £20 and in next to new condition
worth looking on the Australian version maybe?
How do the Beatles Guitars handle? Worth getting?
I do often keep my eyes on Gumtree as well, doesn’t help that most people have their sales set to pickup only and I live in the middle of nowhere, haha.
For the remaining 30 seconds you need to continue the beat track; and move the end event at the end of the song. Keeping the template as it is for everything isn’t gonna work; you need to at least do that.
Thanks for the point in the right direction. I wasn’t too familiar but I did a bit of reading and figured it out and was able to get my song built in Magma.
Cheers
September 27, 2015 at 4:35 am in reply to: Three Aussie Rock songs I’m almost willing to pay to have authored! #456033That DZ Deathrays track sounds awesome! I’ll definitely get around to doing that one
Sweet man, thanks!
If you dig their stuff, give their album Black Rat a go, Gina Works at Hearts is what got me into them.
Looking forward to playing the custom when you get around to it!
