So yesterday — Friday, that is, three days after launch — Amazon finally tells me my order is on the way. So I might see it Monday. Maybe. And maybe I’ll have bought an XBone by then…

I swear I posted in this thread before. Anyway, I won’t get an Xbox One until Christmas at the earliest; so I can’t play RB4.

Ten days after the RB4 launch and I finally have an XBone. I bought the Forza 6 bundle, so my roommate will be happy too. He and I both go for racing games, at least when I’m not busy playing (or charting!) a “Rock Band” game and he isn’t busy fixing computers for people.

Now I just need to find a place on the shelf for it… and rearrange the other gizmos to free up an HDMI port… and sit through what the box threatens to be “significant” downloads… then unbox and install RB4… then deal with the instrument firmware update from Mad Catz… then deal with DLC entitlements… then see about getting money in my XBox Live account for new DLC because I don’t trust Microsoft with my credit card number…

Sheesh, this feels too much like work. I have never been this unenthusiastic about firing up a new video game console. Even the Nintendo Virtual Boy was more fun to set up and play than what this is shaping up to be.

The firmware updates are really, really simple. It takes longer to download the updater file than to do it.

All, Forza 6 is pretty badass. Can’t wait for Horizon 3 or whatever the next iteration will be. I prefer the Horizon offshoots to the track specific main games.

For anyone who’s interested, I got RB4 yesterday – managed to get a copy with a legacy instrument adapter (wasn’t easy to find!) as I didn’t have enough money for the band bundle. I’m really enjoying it so far – for those of you who haven’t got it yet, or if you’re not convinced about getting it, I would personally recommend it, especially with the RB3 export later in the year and maybe RBN next year

So almost a month after the fact, I finally got around to setting up my XBone and putting in Rock Band 4.

I have to admit, Microsoft made the XBone’s initial set up a lot less painful than I thought it would be. That “significant” download they threatened came through fairly quickly and the updates themselves seem to go a lot more smoothly and quickly than on the 360. I was less impressed by the fact I had to download Forza Motorsport 6. Yeah, I know, it’s a minor nitpick, but if they go through the trouble of customizing the hardware and customizing the packaging, you’d figure they could find some way to put the game on the hard drive at the factory and not make you download 46 gigs to play something that supposedly comes “bundled.” Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised to see they’ve figured out how to let you start playing a game even while it’s still downloading. I’m also digging the new dashboard and the ability to browse system settings and the like without interrupting a game in progress. It’s obviously still a Microsoft product, but at least they’re trying to make it a more pleasant experience as they turn you into a marketing statistic.

As for Rock Band 4, I only had time for some vocals in quick play, but so far, I like it. It’s a step down from Rock Band 3, but for what it is and for what Harmonix promised, it’s not bad at all. Downloading legacy tracks was fairly painless and the supposedly horrible vocal lag was barely noticeable… in fact I kind of liked the hint of echo it gave, making it sound more like you’re singing in some vast arena. The new vocal freestyle isn’t quite what I figured it would be, and it doesn’t allow for just any alternate singing that might otherwise fit the song, but it does give a lot more freedom overall than I thought it would. I will always wish the game had keys, and I wait with held breath for Harmonix or Mad Catz to let me use my e-kit for drums, but again, so far, I like it.

By the way, as tempting as it may be, don’t put anything on top of the XBone.

My same reaction when I bought my PS4 “bundled” with The Last of Us Remastered. But lucky for us with fast internet connections it’s a minor inconvenience at best. When I bought my Xbox One “bundled” with AC Blag Flag and AC Unity, they both came as download codes, which I found annoying. I was hoping to trade those in since I’m primarily a PC gamer and already had both of them on my PC. I ended up giving them both away.

I actually prefer the Xbox One dashboard to the PS4, I can’t seem to find things as easily there as I can with the Xbox. Maybe because I’ve never owned a PS product prior to this one and I’m still learning the ropes so to speak. Still, not very intuitive I think.

Yeah, if you wait a month after release sure lots of things are painless. Wasn’t so painless for those of us with the game on day one :argh:
