I figure after about 6 years playing these games, people must’ve pretty much sorted out their ultimate play-station.
So what have you got going on! Stock instruments? Beatles? Madkatz stuff? Electric drumkits? I’m sure there must be a big enough degree of individuality by now. Pictures welcome!
I’m kinda haphazardly set up in a garage right now, but this is what I’m rockin’ (I take playing the drums on RB pretty seriously hah):
January 9, 2014 at 11:44 pm #411926That looks pretty awesome xD I have a Wii GHWoR drum kit I link up by midi adaptor for Xbox, which is awkward so I don’t often use it, and I have a billion Wii guitars i no longer use, but all 3 Xbox guitars are broken in one way or another >_< and new ones are like £50.. but I've always got the keyboard, Turntable, and three mics on hand, including my mic stand, decorated with Silk GnR scarf they sold when they were touring, but it has Slash on, so I guess they don't sell them anymore.. also 5.1 surround sound is a big plus
January 9, 2014 at 11:44 pm #411927Pretty sweet drum setup. Do you have trouble with that vkit? Mine seems so intermittent with the blue cymbal. It keeps me from getting any FC. Maybe a pic later. Sorry for off-topic.
January 10, 2014 at 12:50 am #411933List of stuff I have that I use with RB3:
Mustang Pro Guitar
3 Guitar Hero Les Pauls
1 Guitar Hero Xplorer
2 Wireless Fender controllers
1 Shure SM58 mic with usb adapter
2 Wireless mics
2 Wired Rock Band 2 mics
Wireless Keyboard
Custom microphone stand
Detailed run down:
I don’t particularly like the Rock Band guitar controllers, so I’m usually using a wireless Guitar Hero 3 controller (the Les Paul model). I’m a big fan of those controllers, but I did have to modify a few of them slightly to get them to their full potential. I used to have four, but I gave one to a friend of mine because he didn’t have one, so I have three now.
The issue with the Les Paul controllers is that the neck has a design flaw. Its made to be removable for easy transportation, but the problem lies in the fact that the the neck part of the controller is plagued with two design problems that I’ve personally seen over the years:
1) The neck piece has contacts that sometimes were faulty, causing the buttons to have delay or even not work at all. Thankfully, I’ve come across several PS3 controllers, which, funnily enough, the necks fit perfectly in the 360 guitars. The only actual difference is the fact that the PS3 neck has the buttons labeled with the corresponding shapes found on the face buttons of a PS3 Dualshock 3 controller (Xâ—▲■).
2) The neck often sits too high, or sits too loosely in the slot where its housed for play due to a manufacturing flaw. The neck can also become loose from extended use and wear. This means there will be times during intense play where you’ll be holding down any given button, but the controller won’t register that, because the pins aren’t touching the contacts completely.
I’ve found that you can troubleshoot for this issue by purposely lifting up just slightly on the neck and seeing if that causes any of the five buttons not to register on screen when pressed. To remedy the issue, I’ve found personally that putting shipping tape (or the glossy type scotch tape) on the part of the neck that slides into the slot helps, as it makes it so the neck piece stays firmly in place during play, keeping contact with the pins. This mostly fixes the issue in my case, and since doing this, I haven’t had any issues with that unless the tape wears off, which only happens after a long time if I’m doing it right.
Other than the issues I’ve mentioned, I think the Guitar Hero Les Paul guitars are probably my preferred guitar controllers for most guitar gameplay. That said, however, I think the PS2 SG guitar is a great controller, and I really do wish it had made its way to the 360 in some form other than total modification. Someone did a brilliant mod which utilized the innards of the Explorer guitar, looked nearly official. I sometimes go to the Explorer that came with Guitar Hero 2 for some stuff, but usually I stick to the Les Paul. I just find that it works well with my style of play, and the neck and fret buttons are comfortable to me.
The neck on the Rock Band controllers always felt kind of awkward to me, and I could never get over the buttons. It wasn’t the noise for me when the first guitars came along; it was the shape. I never liked how the buttons felt, as they seemed too big or close together for me to really get along with them. I guess the Guitar Hero controllers just fit my play style more. I’m sure there are just as many folks out there who prefer the Rock Band guitars to the Guitar Hero ones as well.
Otherwise, since I’m mainly on vocals when not on guitar/bass, the biggest piece of hardware that I own that’s not stock in any way is a Shure SM58, which was given to me for Christmas in 2012. I also bought two wireless 360 mics recently because its a pain to have three wired microphones, cause you need to use the USB hub adapter (for more available ports for wired stuff) and all the wires get tangled. That becomes a problem when you often need to transport the entire set up from house to house like I do on occasion.
I just use an adapter chord for my Shure mic, and it works better than the ones that Rock Band and Guitar Hero originally shipped with by far… but the drastic quality difference is definitely shown in the price. It’s not the most expensive mic ever, but it’s not in any way cheap for a guy like me. It’s worth the buy if you have the money though.
As for drums… well, since I almost never play them, I only have a Rock Band 2 with the pro cymbal set. I’ve never really used them too often unless testing something, so I never bothered with getting anything fancy.

Sorry for off-topic.Hm that’s really weird, I’m using my old Ion brain rather than a MIDI adapter, and my ride has two input ports so possibly I’ve got a different thing going on altogether, but I haven’t found any problems at all so far.
January 10, 2014 at 2:00 am #411940After six years of Frankensteining my stuff together I have ended up with kind of a mess, my hi-hat and crash have both been fixed using piezos from old drum pads that I upgraded and are covered with duct tape to hold them together (they don’t look pretty) I have an original RB1 Strat that had the strum fix and tilt sensors replaced that is less responsive in RB3 so I have to use the button which is a pain in the ass, I have a GH Explorer that the orange button works part of the time, my RB keyboard and Lips wireless mic are the only things that still work flawlessly which really sucks because I mostly play drums!
January 10, 2014 at 4:19 am #411953Rock Band 2 drum kit with 3 Rock Band 3 Pro cymbals with double bass pedals.
3 wired usb mics w/one mic stand for lead singer
Rock Band 3 keyboard (need to get that keyboard stand)
2 Rock Band basic plastic guitars (not sure but I think they are Rock Band 2 or Rock Band 3 guitars)
Mustang Pro Guitar
1 Guitar Hero plastic guitar (I think it’s a Guitar Hero 5 guitar, but maybe World Tour)
I have over 100 customs and then over 500 in-game songs and official DLC.
January 10, 2014 at 10:35 am #4119681 GHWoR guitar
1 TBRB guitar as can be seen in picture from first post
1 BH drum kit but I don’t use it anymore
1 TBRB drum kit + pro-cymbals kit -> I still need to buy a 2nd pedal
1 Madcatz keyboard
4 usb micks (3 from GH, 1 from TBRB bundle) + 1 microphone stand
I had 4 guitars at a particular time, but sold 2 of them to friends in need.
Next step is buying a pro guitar, this is my 2014 resolution. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif” />
And ofc I own every GH & RB games released so far, around 300 official DLC and xxx custom songs, which might come to 1500-1600 songs in total.
Which makes me think: is there a place in this forum to share gamertags or something and be able to play customs but also official content online? Might be a nice idea. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
Well, if someone’s interested, my pseudo here is my gamertag on XBL.

At one time back in 2009 in the rhythm game heyday I had 17 plastic guitars and like 12 microphones!
January 10, 2014 at 12:35 pm #4119761 Pro Guitar, 2 RB2 Guitars, a RB2 drum set with two RB2 cymbals, 1 mic (generally people bring their own if they want harmonies), 1 mic stand, and the RB3 keyboard and keyboard stand. Also, my wii is softmodded and on emulated NAND which made it possible to add album art back into all the old DLC that didn’t have it.
I also have an unpowered USB hub to avoid random instruments shutting off (a problem that’s apparently much worse on wii than on other consoles)
Oh, and we use a projector for the best experience

My ride has 2 input as well, but the cables come set up so I use it as my green (crash) because it is longer than my cable for the blue.
I have an ION brain I should use. ephin duh! You have to play with the threshold and sensitivity for the stock brain my kit came with. It’s really good, it just isn’t perfect. Or it could just be that it is perfect and I suck at drums.
thx.

Thought I’d mention something kind of random I noticed, when playing customs from this site my cymbals seem a lot more sensitive and my hi hat and crash will double hit so bad I got one of those cymbal boxes from the RB Kickbox guys so I can adjust the sensitivity, I’m baffled as to why this is happening, but I will usually play my customs before I play anything else so I don’t have to keep adjusting them!
Forgot to mention those two cymbals have piezos from old drum pads, but I don’t know what difference it makes because it doesn’t affect official songs!
January 16, 2014 at 8:32 pm #412330Not sure if others do this with the RB microphone. Essentially now I can connect any microphone to the usb dongle I made out of a chopped RB mic.
Setup. Gets loud.
Drums!
Sadly RockBand parties have slowed down. I’m in the process of finishing this format.
As for mercuryshadow09, that makes no sense why customs would be more sensitive to the piezo than an official release.
January 21, 2014 at 3:08 pm #412633The issue with the Les Paul controllers is that the neck has a design flaw. This can be fixed very easily by applying dots of solder to the contact points inside the neck. Here is the video showing the fix. I’ve done this to 2 Les Pauls worked great.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjJHEVEo_qo
