What is the demand for customs supporting Pro Guitar/Bass (and how difficult they are to chart)?

At this time of the year I always have very little time for hobbies, so I am not doing any custom-charting work right now, but at least I am planning ahead… ” data-emoticon=”” src=”
/emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” title=”” /> I have never tried to chart Pro Guitar/Bass, and I would like to understand if it’s worth learning it, so I wonder first of all how many people do you think are actually interested in customs with Pro Guitar/Bass parts. A quick search on the customs database tells me that there have been only 83 customs with Pro Guitar/Bass ever charted, that’s really few compared to the ~15k total number of customs!
Is it so that almost nobody plays Pro Guitar/Bass, or rather that it is so difficult and/or time-consuming that nobody wants to chart it?
October 28, 2020 at 6:00 pm #514842It definitely is a niche as not as many people have pro guitars to even play but the other issue player-wise is if a song is even good for pro guitar/bass and is essentially worth learning how to play the real guitar chords for. For example I have some pro guitar songs planned and for the most part they are songs that I could see people wanting to learn how to play on guitar or bass which for the most part are relatively easy.
Charting wise it is just very time consuming depending on the song as you have to go note by note changing the velocity to match where your fingers are supposed to be on the guitar neck
October 29, 2020 at 5:38 am #514853It’s going to be more difficult to chart pro guitar/bass if you have no reference to do so. I’ve only charted pro guitar/bass for songs that are in rocksmith or it’s a song that I can decide how the chart goes (because it’s usually synth). It takes some work to transcribe it but because it’s from rocksmith, it’s usually going to be high quality. The other songs are basically synth only or the part was so simple, I could do it easily.
Also in my search, I found Pro Guitar has 409 songs and Pro Bass has 455 with 374 having both (due to the database still being a WIP, those numbers might not be accurate). So I’m not sure where you got 83 from (There are 83 songs on the RB3 disc).

Mmm… I opened up the filter box and selected instruments -> Pro Guitar, and also clicked the checkboxes for customs and C3 (to exclude DLC and RBN). I got 83 results (none from RB3 disc), or 82 if I choose Pro Bass instead.

The C3 Universe filter doesn’t currently work, so you probably got the C3 Official releases only.

You are right ” data-emoticon=”” src=”
/emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” title=”” /> The filter actually does work but there was no filter option for customs, I had selected “C3 Official” + “C3 Universe”, thinking that the latter was for customs, but instead selecting only “C3 Universe” yields 0 results. Not selecting any filter results in 721 songs with Pro Guitar and 767 with Pro Bass. Minus 312 (which is DLC+RBN) results in 409 customs with Pro Guitar and 455 with Pro Bass just like you said, thanks!
October 29, 2020 at 1:47 pm #514857Honestly i think 99% of the people who are in the “Real guitar video game” niche are in Rocksmith. And for a good reason too, the ability to use your actual guitar is great, and they have a lot more customs than we have with pro-guitar. The one advantage of RB is being able to play along with other instruments such as drums.
So I don’t think the demand is great, but on the other hand i’ve charted a bunch of obscure songs that I knew would have low demand, because i wanted to play them. So you can always do it for you and than share with us ” data-emoticon=”” src=”

That’s literally what I mean by doesn’t work. That filter is supposed to be for customs.

Although, I have a pro-guitar and its not very realistic as they are trying to portray. As Yaniv said, Rocksmith is WAY better than anything Rock Band is trying to do when it comes to pro guitars. And of course with the customs (Cherub Rock anyone?) there is a ton of material.
October 30, 2020 at 5:11 am #514873Why not play both? ” data-emoticon=”” src=”
/emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” title=”” /> TBH I only got interested in Pro Guitar because I found one at a more than reasonable price. As a former guitarist I understand the severe limitations of Rock Band (no bending is the biggest bummer IMO) but each game has strength and weaknesses.
RockSmith is the best deal for guitar and bass. But it’s basically a solo game (or two people at best). It has near-zero value as a party game for me. I can see me playing it with my daughter, but I play RockBand with the whole family. Also, I detest the UI, it’s way too much animated and cramped. I may be wrong but I think I’ve also read that RS can’t manage more than 3 strings played at the same time? This is less severe than the lack of bending but it is still a bummer.
BandFuse IMO has a much easier and better UI, at least for someone used to TABs. But the game failed commercially so nobody cared to figure out how to make customs, so the long-term potential is minimal. Also (not sure but) I think you can’t even play in 2, just 1 player.
RockBand is full band and that beats everything for me. No instrument is perfect (Pro Drums can’t support a few specific cymbal/tom combos, Pro Keys is limited to a 10th interval at any time, Pro Guitar supports no bending/muting/tapping/harmonics, Pro Bass has to be play with guitar) but it’s quite close anyway. The short stick is still certainly for guitar/bass.
PhaseShift should have been the solution to bring together the best of all games, and add more on top of that, but it’s an unfinished game and probably it will never be finished (IMO it should have been turned into an open source project but I digress).
As a matter of fact my plan was to get RockSmith before the xmas holidays, but I stumbled upon a good deal for the Pro Guitar so I went with that. But I am still going to get RockSmith as well eventually (since we already have real guitar and bass in the house, it is very inexpensive for us), and I would get BandFuse too if it wasn’t that hard to find around here. But yeah my original question is for charting… I would try to add Pro Guitar/Bass to my few customs if enough people is interested but I get the feeling that charting more customs without Pro instruments is a lot more appreciated that adding Pro instruments to existing customs.
October 31, 2020 at 5:34 pm #514890There are tools that you can use to dissect a Rocksmith custom and get it into Rock Band 3 MIDI format, it’s not terribly difficult.

Are these tools shared on the customsforge forums? I don’t know if there is any cooperation between the two communities but it would be certainly useful to know more about anything that simplifies conversions.
October 31, 2020 at 9:23 pm #514893In the meantime, I got the Squier Pro Guitar and gave it a test drive in the game… and received a humiliating experience by trying to play Help! by The Beatles and scoring ZERO on my first attempt 🤣
November 11, 2020 at 8:13 pm #515006In short, you can use the Rocksmith customs toolkit to unpack a custom song and them import the decrypted audio and instrument arrangements (XML files) into EOF.
