For example,

I think that a Custom with all available instruments, including Keys & Pro Keys if applicable, Vocals and harmonies, auto-generated reductions, practice events and automatic venue would be a good balance of time/effort spent and quality of customs.

I’m just thinking about what could really be the standard of quality that everyone would class as “done”.

Personally, If I had to order them, I’d put it like this:

Instruments (inc Vocals + OD Sections)

Reduction Difficulties (I often play with RockBand newbies)

Practice Events (Many songs have “that bit” that is either hard or epic so to nail needs practice, handy for learning solos etc. also easy to implement)

Count-Ins (for that special epic “start the song” feel)

All of the above completed to a high quality.

And then everything else like, stems, venue etc. as not as necessary for enjoyment.

I beg to disagree there. I find that playig song with an auto gen venue very boring for the most part. A good venue can keep you interested while playing or waiting for you insrument to start. It’s annoying to me when an awesome guitar solo is playing but the camera cuts to a far away shot. Many times I find my self just sitting down and watching the venues for songs, rather then playing them. It’s great to see those special ones that stick out from everything else

That’s a good point, I haven’t actually played in a while, so my opinion will probably change. I’m quite eager to play/chart keys suddenly, and they can be quite boring – I bet it would be easier seeing that perspective as a keys player. Thank you for your input

EDIT: Do you find that it’s always worth it for every custom though? In fact did any official rockband songs have auto-generated venues? It was a built-in magma function wasn’t it?

A song finished up to the standards of RB3 DLC or a C3 release is what I would consider 100% done, despite the fact that I mainly just do guitar/drums for my own customs.

I do wish I had the time and know-how to put my customs together to that degree, but unfortunately life calls and I have far too many other hobbies

I also definitely support the point made by Mango about venues. Songs like Won’t Get Fooled Again really wouldn’t be the same in RB without the work done on the venue/events.

I think a lot of the long classic rock songs like that do require that extra touch. I’m charting mainly things like Blink-182 and the songs are usually more consistently energetic throughout. As far as your own customs go, I think grouping up with other authors goes a massive way in helping them reach a Full-Band reduction-charted level.

I think the main gripe I have with sort of “external” visual effects go (anything outside of your scrolling fretboard) the graphics in the game itself aren’t anything to scream and shout about, I think they should’ve considered letting people add the official music videos etc like in phase shift. That looks great IMO. I’m sure there was a good reason why not but Wow it looks/feels great to see the band playing at the same time.

Next time I’m on the game I’ll try to pay attention to how the venue track translates into the game, if people really think it has such an impact, I think it’s worth learning about. An extra way to get creative with customs is fine by me

There’s a bunch of official songs that I find boring to watch. I guess it comes down to the song itself. Some songs I can think of what cuts and effects can go where, while others I struggle

If the point of the poll is to find what is a good compromise for everybody, we can’t say “everything must be done and must be done perfectly”, because that’s not a compromise.

If I’m understanding what you’re saying you mean that you think people will just vote that charts should be the best quality possible? I was thinking vote from the perspective of an author haha, or at least empathising with one, what would you go for? Or thinking about time constraints.

Basically, we all get to that point where you feel good because you’ve just “finished” a custom. Where is that point for you? And like I said personally for me that is when everything is done bar the venue track. But after gathering some opinions I’m now curious, so sometime I’m gonna take a looky at venues and see what can be done with it.

What I’m saying is that Mang0’s objection is beyond the scope of this poll. Every single part of a song can be deemed essential, but I think what you’re asking is “what’s your compromise?”, in which case something’s gotta give.

            #470919

Well not necessarily, I suppose. Theres an option for people who strive for DLC quality tracks and one for customs with everything bar stems. I just thought it’d be interesting to see what kind of level we’re all on. Everybody is time constrained here and for the people pleasers it might help to see what kind of quality people expect overall, so they could adjust their charting efforts accordingly maybe? Idk take it or leave it haha :’)

For instance, if venue tracked customs turn out to be popular with the poll then I might consider adding them to customs, despite being content with my customs lacking them.

Also at the same time I’m trying to get other authors to give some thought to practice events, since I find them not only nice n neat but incredibly useful (personal opinion obviously) and often forgotten (or deliberately ommitted who knows).

            #470925

For me it’s Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals charted with reductions, basically, stuff that would actually be used by people I play with.

That being said, stuff like venues etc are nice, but I’m more focused on gameplay.

For me customs, the ideal checklist goes:

              • Legacy Instruments (G/B/D/V)
              • Overdrive Sections/Drum Fills
              • Reductions from CAT

If I added in the venue, animations, and pro instruments for every song I’d probably never get anything released. I’ve done the venue on a couple of my customs and it is pretty cool if you have the time to do it. I play drums almost exclusively so I do release some Drum/Guitar only tracks. Charting vocals takes me the longest, but I’ve found that unless you’re putting out a metal track that’d be all talkies, people really want those vocals.

              #470941

For the poll, imo, a “finished” custom is everything available charted, instrument-wise, barring Pro G/B.

Along with reductions (both CAT and manual are fine for me) and OD/drum fills.

But as far as customs go, I try to get at least G/B/D/K done, since all those are the easiest for me.

I will also try vocals if I can do it on my own with no help (i.e. TesseracT, AA – The Black) or if I have a tab/midi to work from and fix whatever necessary.
