During the time when Rock Band 2 was getting DLC, Harmonix released the original versions for some songs that used cover versions in Rock Band 1. They were the Rush songs (Tom Sawyer, Limelight, & Working Man), Iron Maiden songs (Run to the Hills & The Number of the Beast) and Fortunate Son. Then after that, we never got more “original version” DLC songs. But how come? It’s a shame Harmonix stopped releasing this type of DLC.
It boggles my mind that Rock Band had to settle with a cover for Juke Box Hero, while Guitar Hero III got the master recording (Rock Band released this song on November 20, 2007 and then it was released in Guitar Hero III on January 24, 2008. What the heck?). Harmonix should continue releasing DLC like this. I definitely want to see the OG versions for Mississippi Queen, Train Kept A-Rollin’ and My Sharona (which all got their master recordings released for Rocksmith DLC).
What do you think about this? I definitely believe Harmonix should bring this kind of DLC back.

May 2, 2020 at 11:47 pm #511181The only reason they ever did the covers anyway was because they couldn’t get the rights/stems to the originals. I think it’s possible for some songs that haven’t gotten an original version that the stems are lost.

At that time, with a larger audience and more recouping for licensing, it made sense. After the fallout of music games, it makes no sense. The RB audience is relatively small at this point. Not seeing a lot of “well known” songs right now at all. And HMX is an independent company; whereas, Rocksmith has powerhouse Ubisoft behind them.

That is pretty true. Probably explains why Rocksmith had some songs that were seemingly impossible to get.
As for well known songs, we got songs like “Born to Be Wild”, “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and the Simple Plan pack so far this year. But overall, those are the only standouts I see. Every other song is either from a small band or a recent song from a well-known band (i.e. “Bad Decisions” by The Strokes, “The End of the Game” by Weezer)
