U2 has used an interview with Rolling Stone to apologise, once again, for the Songs of Innocence / iTunes debacle and to detail what is coming in the next couple of years.
Songs of Innocence was offered free by U2 and Apple for four weeks to anyone that had an iTunes account. The intention was that the album would be made available to users but, instead, some found that the set was automatically downloaded onto their phones, iPads, etc. creating what Bono described as a ‘shitstorm.’
The singer told Rolling Stone ‘It’s like we put a bottle of milk in people’s fridge that they weren’t asking for. It is a gross invasion but it was kind of an accident. The milk was supposed to be in the cloud. It was supposed to be on the front doorstep.’
Bono also laid out the band’s plans for the next few years. Originally, there had been rumors that the followup, Songs of Experience, would be out soon after Innocence; however, he is now saying that it will hit the streets about 18 months from now. They will then follow, sometime after Experience, with Songs of Ascent, completing a trilogy of albums. The singers says of the last album that ‘there are some beautiful songs.’
The full interview is in the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone with U2 on the cover.
Thoughts on Future bands “automatically” appearing on your Smartphone? is it a bad thing? do you care? Thoughts Below
October 25, 2014 at 3:23 pm #431646Good they apologized for this thing. It’s awesome to have the option to get free stuff from a creator, but getting forced it on you is just obnoxious and unnecessary when you might not be interested in it
October 25, 2014 at 4:11 pm #431648I curate pretty carefully what goes on my iphone. I love U2 and actually quite enjoyed the new album (which I listened to when it appeared automatically). But it was still kind of annoying that it just showed up. Especially since my phone usually has like, no storage space, and if it fills up, it will start to randomly delete other songs.

October 26, 2014 at 3:31 pm #431688I honestly didn’t mind them giving me the album. If it’s free I like it (the album is very good as well. Can’t wait to pick up the bonus tracks!).
October 27, 2014 at 9:03 pm #431745He shouldn’t have to apologize. This generation has their priorities all wrong. The planet is melting, our economy is awful, we have wars going on that aren’t getting attention, etc and people are most outraged by an album appearing in their itunes library?

The planet is melting, our economy is awful, we have wars going on that aren’t getting attention, etc and people are most outraged by an album appearing in their itunes library? To be fair, getting something forced on you as a required download when you have no interest in it what so ever is still really annoying even if it isn’t the end of the world or anything, and it is nice to see someone who is usually known for his huge ego humble himself to apologize for the whole thing
Though yeah, if somebody felt this was a more important case to worry about than the climate, wars, economy, etc. then they are very silly people
