I’m confident about the rest of my drum chart thus far, but here:

The second verse on this (1:19) is super hard for me to make out. Note that the tab I’ve found for this, as well as every drum cover, has the drums playing the hi hat instead of the china cymbal, plus I shouldn’t really rely too much on live videos since in this case they seem to vary from the original version. There’s obviously hi hat kick playing there, but it’s the snare ghost notes and china hits that are most hard to make out for me.

I’ll provide anything else on request if necessary.)

EDIT: Huh… It’s likely I’ve mistaken part of the sound of the rattling snare (bleed?) for something else? This is the most my mind has ever played tricks on me white charting, because it sounds a lot like there’s a china or china-esque cymbal going on here as well.

On a relevant side note, this may continue to be the case for me trying to chart drums by ear with ghost notes in mind, same with bass guitar in general to some degree. Not sure if there’s anything wrong with my own hearing or what else. I have flat EQ headphones so that likely isn’t a problem. One thing I’ve also tried when charting bass or drums by ear is changing the EQ of the main track to isolate either, but that doesn’t seem to work too well. Advice?

If the segment you linked is correct, there is not a lot on the chart that I can hear in the song.

      1) There are definitely no rides or china hits there, just a closed hi hat

      2) I can hear no ghost note on the snare. Snare goes off on the 2 and the 4 on the downbeat and at x.2.75 on the upbeat. Even if with a ton of equipment and separation you can somehow make out some ghost notes, you can’t hear them in the full mix and you break immersion by adding notes where the player can’t hear them

      3) The kick pattern needs a check, I hear one less kick per measure (at x.3.50)

      4) The hi hat seems like a straight 1/8ths with some triple hits thrown in. This is one of those cases IMO where you need to assume what the drummer is doing, because the hits you can clearly hear would be too random to make sense

      5) I can’t hear foot activated hi hat as you suggested

      Noted. Thanks for the input!

I’m gonna give a different opinion on this issue. You would definitely benefit from using a plugin like MSED when you chart. It allows you to mute the center audio and the side audio, so you can hear different parts of the song better. If you need help setting it up, PM me and I’ll try to help you out.

To me, it seems obvious that there’s ghost snare going on in that section, but it’s hard to hear what exactly is being played. Using MSED would probably help you out here. Personally, I would chart ghost snares whenever possible, because at the end of the day, it’s a part of the song that the drummer is playing, and if you want to create a realistic experience, then everything should be charted to the best of your ability. You could satisfy both sides of the issue by creating two versions of the chart: one with ghost notes charted, and one without. Good luck on the chart!
