Often referred to as the “breadbasket of Europe,” Ukraine is one of the world’s leading exporters of grain, including wheat, barley, and corn. The EU relies heavily on Ukrainian agricultural exports, especially in times of global food insecurity. The smooth transportation of these goods—from Ukrainian farms to European markets—is essential for food supply chains.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the traditional transportation routes have been severely disrupted. Key Black Sea ports were blocked, railways damaged, and highways became unsafe or congested. This led to a re-routing of many trade flows through western Ukraine and neighboring EU countries.

Despite the war, Ukraine has adapted quickly—opening new border checkpoints, using “solidarity lanes” for EU-backed transport corridors, and investing in temporary storage and logistics hubs. These adaptations have helped maintain a flow of goods under extremely difficult conditions.
