You might as well go ahead & explain ’em. I’m baffled!
June 15, 2013 at 10:39 am #401421Alright, here goes.
1. “This track was an “Original Version” by an artist who did that before it became mainstream. /hipster glasses”
Guns N’ Roses’ “Don’t Cry” was released with an (Original) suffix, helping to differentiate it from the alternate lyrics version featured on Use Your Illusion II, which had the similarly apt (Alt. Lyrics) suffix.
2. “Renaming this purple single avoided a kinky dead end.”
A more cryptic hint, this teaser for Electric Light Orchestra’s “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” relates to the fact that the original title was “Dead End Street”, which was subsequently to avoid confusion with a 1966 song of the same name by The Kinks. As for the purple? Initial copies of the 12″/7″ formats were pressed in transparent purple vinyl.
3. “The lyrics for this modern track take a look at the inner turmoil and struggles of those involved in the Iraq war. That should narrow it down to just about 80% of the music released between 2004 and 2010.”
The Keane ones are a little tougher to crack as I was struggling with providing hints that didn’t get too specific. This one is for “Is It Any Wonder?”, and I had considered specifying it was a FtV release to narrow it down a bit, but I thought that might lead to a breadcrumb trailer easily deciphering the others. Instead, the only indicator was the comment that we had a mix of new and updated tracks.
4. “This track by an artist already in Rock Band is a cover of a track by an artist that is in Rock Band (but the track isn’t).”
As was astutely guessed in this thread, this the cover version of Paul McCartney/Wings’ “Live and Let Die” performed by Guns N’ Roses.
5. “This track is, at its core, a song about the band’s struggles to make it as a band, wondering what their place in the world would be. That place would be to have introspective, soul-searching singles end up on TV soundtracks.”
The second Keane hint, this one refers to “Everybody’s Changing”, which founds its way onto an episode of Scrubs (I did consider mentioning the episode, but again, maybe too specific).
6. “This song’s title is only one word shy of being bountiful, beautiful alliteration.”
Simple. “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” (I even tried to keep the Bs) by Primus.
7. “This song was tied to a movie that can draw links to the following elements: World War I, a Canadian zoo, and a ball-bustingly hard flash game. Its relationship to this movie is similar to that of Lux Aeterna and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Have fun.”
The last of the Keane hints, this refers to “Somewhere Only We Know”, which was featured in the trailer to the Winnie the Pooh film, which relates to the Zoo/WWI component through the inspiration for its creation, though I did discover that it was actually just a Canadian bear in a London zoo, so, oops), and also has this ball-bustingly hard flash game (here’s an associated NeoGAF thread, which is hilarious). As for the Lux Aeterna comment? This track was only featured in the trailer, and did not otherwise appear in the film/soundtrack.
8. “The title for this song contains thirteen characters which, when converted to individual binary representations and then summed up as a decimal, total a thousand more than a power of two.”
Someone said the initial hint was too easy, so you got this hint for Guns N’ Roses power ballad “November Rain”. If you convert each of the characters (including the space) into decimal values, and then sum them, they total 1,256, which is a thousand more than a power of two — 1,000 + 2^.
June 15, 2013 at 12:42 pm #401422Blimey even the boffins in Bletchley Park would struggle with them clues
June 15, 2013 at 3:46 pm #401425No shit. An ENIGMA machine wouldn’t have helped me on any of them.
Espher, you’ve got a lucrative career as a mystery writer ahead of you.

Well, the options were going easier and risking the surprise being spoiled, or going RB3 forums-style and making them quite difficult to deduce. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif”>
June 18, 2013 at 7:50 pm #401639Is there going to be a hint thread for this week’s (June 21st) release?!

June 18, 2013 at 10:49 pm #401646There will be. I just need to try and brainstorm some hints, and I’ve been a little busy trying to finish up a release and an RB:HP release. I’ll try to get something together tonight… no promises.
June 19, 2013 at 2:04 pm #401679Don’t sweat it. You’re just going to stump me anyway. I’m content to wait until I get home from work on Friday!

Hmm… I would consider doing that one week. Probably not for this one, but I’ll pitch it to the team. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif”>
