Slowing the song down helps. A little over half speed is usually what I do.

This video helped me out TONS:

The instructor in the video uses Time for the Timebase option (File > Project Settings > Timebase for items/envelopes/markers). Keep in mind, you can use Beats as well, it’s the same concept. I use Time for tempo mapping, and I haven’t ran into any issues yet.

Without that video, I don’t think I would have made it. There are other videos out there, but they assume you have a lot of knowledge. This video was unique as it really walked you through as if you didn’t know a thing.

If you are still struggling, I might be able to help.

I’m more eager to “trade” areas of work., i.e. a tempo map in exchange for an instrument chart for one of my songs.

The fastest way to adjust the tempo for one measure, if the time signature stays the same, is pressing Q at the beginning of the next measure. Adds a time signature marker for the previous measure with the right BPM. For multiple measures, for example in intro’s where it’s hard to exactly pin down the start of a new measure, it’s better to make a selection as shown in the video. I don’t however use the splits and heals.

I don’t either. It’s just additional info to complete the picture. But ya, not necessary for custom making.

I’m assuming you mean tempo and not bpm. So the below is based on that assumption.

The best thing to do if you struggle with identifying the tempo, is tap your foot to the beat of the song for as long as it takes until you’re in rhythm. Once you start identifying the rhythm and you feel good about your foot tapping, go back to the beginning and keep that same rhythm with your foot. Start your foot out on the very first note you hear. NOW, the fifth time you tap your foot, that’s the place where you want to place the second time marker (you should have already placed one at the 3.1.0 mark), this is what is called the downbeat. The reason you mark on five is the very first tap of your foot was a downbeat as well. All the other taps of your foot were the upbeats.

So it goes like this for the first measure:

                tap, tap, tap, tap, MARK

so the confusion comes (at least it did for me anyway) is that all subsequent marks will be on the fourth foot tap.

So it goes like this for all subsequent measures:

                tap, tap, tap, MARK

                tap, tap, tap, MARK

                tap, tap, tap, MARK

I’m going to put together a video tutorial for beginners soon as I think this is ultra important and I know that everyone can do it if they just had a simpler way to see it and do it. Basically, if you can count to 5 and tap your foot, you should be able to do it. There is a bit more to it from a visual standpoint, but that base model should get anyone started.

Now, this is just for songs that stay in the same beat. Anything past that will be advanced learning. Hopefully most songs you want to chart stay in the same BPM.
