Not sure if this has already been addressed elsewhere (and the forum search function told me my search terms were too common :/), but if one were looking for audio stems to author a multitrack song, where would you look? How have people gotten them in the past?? (Aside from converts from GH and other sources, that is…)

Is it even possible? Is this question dumb and obvious??!

There is a subreddit that has plenty of stems.

      http://www.reddit.com/r/songstems

Use the “No Requests” filter on the right side of the page and you should be able to find a good share of stems, even stems that aren’t from GH/RB.

Interesting things pop up here from time to time. Usually it’s a contest, so you have a limited time to get em:

        How about this software!!!

This is some really cool stuff. I would think in combination with some DTS 5.1 mixes you could get some really decent results. If I was a huge G’N’R fan, I’d be grabbing their DTS mixes right now and trying this method on it. Sorry I’m not a huge enough fan, but I was just looking into grabbing some DTS 5.1 mixes today and I might just play with this digital audio software separation tool.

        Just think of the possibilities!

No. Believe us, we have done our homeworks.

I’m sure you guys have. (Sorry, I wasn’t trying to imply you hadn’t.)

BTW, I’m a pretty decent audio producer, I’d be willing to toy around with that stuff and some DTS mixes myself in the limited free time I have and see if anything fruitful comes of it. Any songs out there high on the priority on DTS, but not already stemmed?

If you’re a pretty good audio producer, trying getting some stems out of lossless rips. the DTS mixes are probably going to give you a harder time than just starting with a stereo lossless file. I’ve managed to make a few decent karaoke stems and 3-4 ( ? ) full stems from stereo files. Not once have I managed anything useful with DTS mixes.

And trust me, I tried for The Rocky Horror Picture Show project that I started and never got anywhere with. I went so far as to buy a blu-ray drive and the anniversary edition blu-ray to get at the 7.1 master audio files…and they’re useless for RB purposes

Thanks for the awesome feedback, somehow I missed the reply… wow, that really stinks about Rocky Horror (dammit, Janet!). At least your pain may save others from the same fate.

Me, I wish I knew enough about engineering to even approach undertaking something like that (I’ve figured out how to highlight bass-y frequencies to help with charting, but that’s it so far). By “lossless rips”, would that be like a FLAC?

I don’t know anything about audio engineering except the few concepts OrangeHarrison shared with me once upon a time. He’s the one that gave me the tips and more or less showed me how to do it. Then it’s been a bunch of time wasted experimenting. I’m not very good at all, really. For every 20 songs I’ve tried, maybe 1 I got a karaoke out of?

Yeah, typically FLAC, WAV etc. But don’t get caught up in that. A lot of people love to boast that they have FLACS so their source audio is better. Then you look at it, and it’s shit audio inside a FLAC container. So to be clear, you’d need lossless audio properly ripped into FLAC, WAV or something like that. But a shitty quality FLAC is not better than a pristine high bitrate MP3. At least, not to me.

Ahh good to know… I think I may have just encountered that the other day – I found a FLAC for a low audio-quality song I had; I was pretty eager for what I expected to be an instant “upgrade”. It turned out the FLAC was pretty much the same crappy audio, just louder. It’s like they poured Natural Light into a champagne bottle.
