Hello guys,
I did a quick search to see whether this topic has risen its head before but couldnt find a reference to it, so I thought Id ask. What are peoples feelings about charting soundtrack scores from films, and how they are charted? I know there are a few in the database already (I have even charted one) but the question is specifically aimed at scores where there isnt necessarily a guitar part etc. I for one love playing mrmet2087s Disney ones from Pirates Of The Carribean, and Id like to chart some iconic ones myself, but I dont want to upset anyone by doing so because they arent Rock Band songs per se. The other part of the question is aimed at how we chart them. Ultimately I prefer the tune being played on guitar, regardless of the orchestral section playing it, but would people get upset if the guitar continued playing the tune throughout the song even if the orchestral section playing the tune changed (eg. if the guitar is playing the strings, it shouldnt then start playing brass parts etc.). Im looking at one specifically that would share the tune between guitar and bass and could be a lot of fun, but Im putting it out to see what the general consensus is around it before I start doing it.

You can chart what you want of course, but personally I see no point forcing something to guitar and bass if it doesn’t have them in the first place. Yes it can be fun but there’s a million songs with appropriate instruments that would be fun and still not charted.
August 12, 2020 at 10:01 pm #513437Generally my rule with orchestra’s is see what is in them and chart it based on that
but for the standard no real guitar/bass, just string section, brass section, WW, percussion
Strings – Guitar
Brass/WW (whichever is the main part) – Keys
Bass Strings – Bass
Percussion (whichever is prominent and playable) – DrumsYou can swap these around and do Brass on guitar for example but if there is like an actual keyboard, definitely put that on keys. Although once you have chosen a part for a part(s) do not change it(them) mid song (don’t give the keys WW for one section, only to then give it to guitar later). Also with orchestras because it is not a real guitar, keys will always take priority on important parts, at least in my opinion
If you use Pro Keys 2 Hands, you a cheater, just saying

I would like to point out that you don’t need to ever worry about how much it “fits” Rock Band. If you like the song and you want to chart it, you’re free to do so. You might catch some grief from people but ultimately it doesn’t matter. It’s your custom and your hobby, you chart what is fun for you. If someone doesn’t agree with it or like it, they don’t have to download it.
As far as I actual charting process, I’d agree with Pike’s approach.
