Hey guys,
I’m working on my first custom. I tried searching for an answer to an issue like this but couldn’t find anything. How do you make a tempo map for a song when the intro doesn’t have an instrument being played constantly and the intro is mainly atmospheric until the drum beat comes in later? The first minute of the song is mostly atmospheric but there are some guitar notes being played here and there. Do you just start the tempo mapping when the drums start? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
The tempo mapping always starts at the first bar.
As for making it, it can be touchey. For songs like this I usually use some music sheets to help me, if they don’t exist I write it (no need to write the pitch of the notes, just the general flow of the songs with the lenght of the notes to give you an idea how to build the tempo map).
There may be an easier or more friendly approach but I don’t know it. If the playing is really minor, you might consider removing that part entirely, but that really depends on the song at this point.
Ok thanks! I’d prefer to keep the intro if possible. Is it ok to even chart the notes in the intro without having to tempo map that part? I’m new to making customs so I’m not too sure. The rest of the song after the intro can be tempo mapped pretty easily so I thought this one might be a good one to start with.
The song is “Modern Love Is Automatic” by A Flock of Seagulls
In this particular case, you could get away with turning off clapping and ignoring the tempo map until the drums, but there’s a couple of things to keep in mind:
1) Make sure that your initial tempo marker is still the same as the beat of the song (i.e. whatever the drum section bpm is).
2) Have the count in right before the drums enter instead of at the beginning.
3) Give the song audio a little delay before it starts.
You may find the guitar notes line up to the beat somewhat, in which case you should adjust the tempo map to match the notes, but I’m not really sure. Completely ignoring the tempo map is bad form, so the more the notes line up to the grid in game, the better you did. It will mostly come down to how much you fiddled with it.
Good luck!
