Considering we already have two versions of the song, a different Blue Cheer track could’ve been selected.

Also, props to BearzUnlimited again for the pro-keys on “Born to Be Wild” and “Fireball”.

Blue Cheer could have also not been selected.

This pack could not have been authored.

We could also be doing a 50 pack of New Kids on the Block.

          Nope, we couldn’t.

          Thanks, great songs this week!

Unfortunately I’m having a problem with the updated version of ‘Berlin – Sex (I’m A…)’. it doesn’t show up in the song list. I downloaded it twice and rebuilt the song cache twice but still no luck. the previous version worked just fine. Is it just me?

I could’ve said something about the Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin song choices too. I chose not to say anything about those songs because that’s not me not caring for the song and that’s a line of subjectivity where if I don’t like it doesn’t mean somebody else won’t like it either (especially acknowledging “Iron Man” is a huge song).

Personally, there are only 4 or 5 of Blue Cheer’s tracks I like so I can care less if they were left out or not. I try to build my criticism to be as objective as possible, and that’s based on the simple fact that “Summertime Blues” is already represented twice in two different versions. When I said “a different Blue Cheer track could’ve been represented”, I mean any other track could’ve been represented whether I had cared for it or not.

My job involves a lot of criticism, constructive or not and what I end up saying is “I appreciate the criticism”. Not just because it’s part of my job, its that I sincerely do. It helps me to better build myself as a designer. Everyone receives criticism, even the most professional of people. Sometimes it’s not even proper criticism. One time, I had somebody say to me about my work “this is crap”. Still, I wasn’t defensive on the level you people are. If I was, I probably would’ve been fired. Please do consider what I typed up was the kind of constructive criticism I would’ve loved to receive at my job.

And don’t give me the guilt trip that you’re doing this for free. I sometimes volunteer my design services to people and that doesn’t stop the criticism of my own work from flowing. I’m not a troll, I’m quite the opposite of one. If you had my job, you’d be fired within a week. I’m not saying this to be mean, I feel that it’s the harsh truth. I’m giving you a glimpse of how the real world works, but, if you sincerely want your rules of conduct on your website to establish “no criticism, good or bad”, then feel free to ban me.

The point is not that you “gave criticism and criticism is bad”, but rather that you worded it in a way that seemed to imply that Bearz is an idiot for charting the song and not another song by the band. It’s fine to not like things that are released and it’s fine to be disappointed if someone picks the “right band but wrong song” as it happens, but when someone charts something it’s because they feel it would be a good experience to have in the game, and even if you don’t care for it that doesn’t mean it’s a waste of time or that they deserve scorn for their choice.

Where in my previous comment did I call BearzUnlimited an “idiot”?

Especially considering I actually did complement him afterwards.

What’s done is done. The song is released. I wasn’t asking him to go back and change it.

I think I read somewhere that the Blue Cheer rendition of “Summertime Blues” is essentially THE first heavy metal song recorded. If that is the case, then that seems to be the most fitting choice for a “Metal Origins” track to me, even if we already have other versions of the track.

See, that’s because you think that song choice can be subject to criticism. It can’t, because we don’t choose what sells or what morally should be in the game, we choose what we like to work on. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”> No choice can be a bad choice, because it’s what WE like to work on. We don’t sit down and choose to spend 14 to 20 frustrating hours on a song that somebody in the community will like, we spend that time on something we love to have in the game, our community then reaps the benefits of that work. So, while HOW songs are authored is very much a matter of criticism, choices are not. We don’t choose a song from a pool of candidates, we choose a song because we like to work on that song.

Besides, nobody is talking about banning you or anything of the sorts. I am just a author with no admin powers and a library of reaction images, the only power I have is to clean up the song request forums and to post said images, and the actual admins seem to also stick with the reaction images and some text.

For what it’s worth, “Summertime Blues”, while already represented twice in the game, is included explicitly because it is an extremely significant track when considering the theme of this pack, as Giga mentions (if it was open season on the catalogue I would have taken Fruit & Icebergs, but that’s neither here nor there).

If you’re going to come in with one-line piece of criticism that is tenuously constructive at best (bouncing between the “y u no pick the songs i liek” and “you suck at picking songs” stuff we see an awful lot, at worst) and then defend that comment by saying that any other Blue Cheer track would have been better because it would have been a ‘new’ song, don’t act surprised when you get sarcastic “defensive” ( :v: ) responses. There are several reasons why I would have selected “Summertime Blues” III: Electric Boogaloo II: Boogaloo Hardest over a deeper cut from the Blue Cheer catalogue: influence/impact, notability for the theme (it was the first heavy metal song to chart on the pop charts!), suitability for Rock Band, and popularity/recognizability relative to other tracks in their catalogue.

You’re right, though — we’d be “fired from your job within a week” if we were you, because clearly we would do things the exact same way if we were trying to design things to satisfy our client/employer’s requirements or the tastes/interests of the client’s target demographic. Your job, our jobs (I’d give you probably two weeks at mine), and this project are all different and operate in different ways.

Honestly, if you came up to me and said “hey, I want to author a Blue Cheer song, but I don’t want to author Summertime Blues because we already have it twice, so I’m going to do Peace of Mind”, hey, two thumbs up. If you told me you wanted to put it into an “origins of heavy metal pack”, my reaction would be the Pikachu facial expression from earlier in the thread.

Edit: Oh, and don’t think we’re saying “no negative constructive feedback allowed” — just be cognisant that it will get the e-equivalent of an eyeroll if it’s not useful.

Figured this would be a good time to thank all the authors for all their hard work and dedication.
