Well, I’ll just quote HMXJosh from my discussion on PC entitlements:
Yes, the game will be published through Steam.
Even if it weren’t, the entitlements you already have on console are through first party, not Harmonix, so we can’t carry those over in either case.
….
We still need to work with first party to get that entitlement. There’s no Harmonix login that you’re using when you buy DLC / exports that can transfer over to Steam. It’s not just about giving you the content on the new platform, it’s about linking content from a previous platform to the new one. We needed MAJOR help from first party to do this already, even just going from last-gen to current-gen to their new console.
Trust me, if this was something we could do, we would. DLC/exports not transferring over is by far the biggest bummer for most people here. There are more complications here than you might think there are.
…
My point is that even if we know every song an individual has purchased, we can’t tie that to a separate account without first party’s help. It’s not like we have access to all of your XBL/PSN account info so we can verify if you’re using the same email address (and what about edge cases, like people who want to use a different email address?)
Essentially, whether the second account is the opposite console (XB1 -> PS4 or PS4 -> XB1), Steam, or a new Harmonix account, there’s no way to reliably export from one account to the other without some way to link the two accounts together. To link the accounts together, we need first party’s support.
March 2, 2016 at 3:58 pm #464504That answer is technical nonsense because it’s based on one thing: there is no Harmonix login. Gee, I wonder how Harmonix could ever fix the situation of a Harmonix product not having a Harmonix login. Oh wait, right, they could simply code one as all other publishers working on multiplatform content (see digital magazines, video, etc.) do.
But, wait, maybe adding a publisher’s login to an app would not be feasible… or maybe it’s exactly what every cross-platform publishers has done once their content started getting published for the Android market after being available on the iPad for months.
But, wait, maybe linking an XBox 360 account to a Harmonix Web account would be technically so difficult that Harmonix could never do it… or maybe they did it for Rock Band 2 to have your avatar printed in 3D so it’s totally possible.
I get it, even if you wanted to gift people DLC on different platforms Sony and/or Microsoft would be on your case, fine. I not only buy that but I also understand that you don’t want to give away too much stuff and I support that decision: make money so you can prosper and work on other Rock Band titles/upgrades. But can we please stop saying that something technically pretty straightforward is absolutely impossible? It’s impossible without a login, of course, which could have been coded before Rock Band 4 was released and added to RB3 at the same time.
March 2, 2016 at 4:09 pm #464505That’s what I tried to argue but he beat me with this. Why don’t you join that conversation so we can see what he says?
March 2, 2016 at 4:33 pm #464508I wonder how confident they are about their song encryption…I bet music labels would throw a hissy fit if the stems from RB were decrypted in, like, an hour after being made available as DLC…
March 2, 2016 at 4:52 pm #464511Well, I’ve been saying it: it will happen. But think beyond encryption. The game has to, at some point, decrypt the audio and store it in memory so it can be played. So even if encryption takes lets say, several months or even a year to crack, what’s to stop us from grabbing the audio from the ram as it’s being sent to the game? I know at least one guy who worked at IBM before he went to law school with me who is an expert at doing just this kind of thing – grabbing and modifying content while it’s in transit in memory.
March 2, 2016 at 5:10 pm #464513Unless RB4 also becomes available through the app store on Windows 10, then I don’t see a way you could officially import your songs from Xbox. Which is unlikely to happen because then they’d have to find another platform to deliver RBN songs, as MS no longer offers a way like previous gen with the XNA framework.

You don’t import songs from the XBox as much as you never imported any “export” in the history of Rock Band except for RB1. You download a piece of content for your system under a license that you bought on another system and that HMX recognizes for any system.

I’m aware. What I meant was that if HMX wants a way to verify existing content licenses, the route of the Windows 10 app store might be a feasible approach as that is the officially backed route from Microsoft.

I understand, but if they wanted to verify content we would have a HMX login. Just coded in for nothing in RB4: have people log in so that, I don’t know, their forums account is tied to the game, that’s it. And then you can use it for content management one day.
March 2, 2016 at 6:01 pm #464519I don’t know if this was brought up, but what if Harmonix’s license agreements require a music royalty to be paid each time a song is added to a user’s game profile content (on each individual platform of the game)? Even if Harmonix or the console companies want to allow somebody to port their DLC, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will really be possible to do for free. And who is going to pay that money?

Unlikely. Also, if that was true they would say so and also give the option to just cover the fee if you want to switch platform.
March 2, 2016 at 6:26 pm #464523If nothing else, I do consider this a big deal just because of the impact it might have on the tools (as mentioned by others in this thread already)
I personally backed it just because I would like to get rid of my Xbox One permanently. This would open the door for that in one way or another without me wondering “what if I could ever have used my drums on RB4.” I also want to believe that it could have an awesome impact on the customs communities (in a positive way, hopefully) and I do appreciate HMX and the games they have released that I have enjoyed.
I guess we’ll find out what happens with it being greenlit in the next few weeks, and then we can go from there.
March 2, 2016 at 6:36 pm #464526I will probably get frowned upon for asking this.
But seriously with all the custom songs on your flash drive / hard drive.
How many times do you play a song from RB1 or RB2 each session one plays Rock Band 3 or RB 4.
I very seldom choose or play songs from my RB1 or RB2 import material.
I understand we all paid for the songs and the import license’s, but if they can’t figure out a way to get them into RB4 PC version !
Is it really the end of the world for you ?
With RBN coming back most of us already have more custom songs then we can fit on our flash drives and stay below the 3,000 song limit to play in RB3 already. It wouldn’t bother me 1 bit if I wanted to play a few songs from RB1 , 2 or 3 to fire up the xbox 360 again and play them that way. I mostly want RB4 PC version to be able to use my E drums with RB4 and the DLC that has been released for it.
Lets face it We’re all on this site for 1 reason, Because we’re tired of playing the songs that came with the game disc correct ?
I don’t understand why people are going off because you can’t import or export songs form RB1,2 or 3, to RB4 PC
that gets very little play time anyway …… I’m sure 10,000 of you will disagree & tell me I’m wrong.
Stop & think about It . When’s the last time some of you Played Freebird ?
March 2, 2016 at 6:58 pm #464528When’s the last time some of you Played Freebird ?
I don’t see how your question relates to the point you’re making here. But I played “Freebird” three days ago out of my own interest.

My Point is Yes I would love to see all my DLC and game disc songs from RB1 , 2 & 3 be able to import and play in RB4 PC version.
But if Harmonix , Steam who ever can’t get it to happen ? It’s not a deal breaker for me personally !
I will still support & purchase RB4 PC if they get the funding. I’ve already gave harmonix $200 of my hard earned money to help them make RB4 PC happen . That was my point Oddbrother.
