Quick question. What is to protocol for authoring drums when the drummer is technically playing a constant 8th stream on the ride, but is accenting with the bell?
The full 8ths cannot always be heard, but there is a clear bell hit. It’s starts as mainly on the quarters with an extra accent, but the next section has more thrown in:
Basically, there is ride hits throughout that section, but I’ve charted the bell hits. Only thing I can think of off hand is Fly Like an Eagle (Steve Miller Band). Harmonix charted just the bell, but I’m not sure if in that song there is a steady rhythm being played or just the bell itself. Here I do know it’s a stream that is alternating between rim’ish hits and bell hits.
Me, I assess the song. If it makes sense to use G I use G. If not, I keep the same cymbal. In many songs HMX opted to keep accents on the same pad considering that the player can still accent on their own (I do it all the time on my Yamaha) and considering that the motion to another pad is less realistic.
Are you asking if just the accents should be charted? I think it’s a case of whether or not all the hits can be heard in the final mix. It’s similar to the open-closed hi-hat thing; chart what feels most right to play. If the intended groove is just the accented hits, then chart just the accents.
