I was wondering how a Chromatic Tuner works for charting vocals, specifically the Korg CA-30 that Nyx mentions in his video before I actually picking one up for vocals charting. The couple attempts I’ve done in vocals charting makes me want to pick one up.

Try first with a simple app for your smartphone, it’s all I use. A dedicated tuner is probably better but if you want to wet your feet an app costs way less.

Alright, do you just hold your phone up to a speaker and play the note you want to test?

I just sing the note but yes, you can do that.

So I downloaded a Chromatic tuner appropriate for vocals. I had much difficulty using it though.

-When repeating a lyric over and over, it would sometimes register and sometimes not, and sometimes when repeating a note over and over it would give different results

-I can’t sing so it’s hard to do it with my voice

Would a real one produce better results or do I need to find a different way

There’s too much else going on in the actual song file in just about anything you’d chart. Unless you have stems, what you’re doing probably won’t work. If you can’t sing, just use ReaSynth and try to match the pitch that way like everyone else. There’s no way around it.

I understand…any specific setting to get the perfect ReaSynth? I’ve noticed some people use different ReaSynth settings when I collaborate with people. Mine tends to be different

Are you sure you can’t sing? Not even humming? Because if you don’t have the ear to sing, that is a problem to identify pitches too.

Maybe humming would work better, I just have a very very low voice so I have trouble getting up there. I’ll try when I get home tonight

For me falsetto works way better, also because the frequency is higher and you get less fluctuation in the readings.

In humming or actual singing? My voice tends to crack quite often in Falsetto too, even when humming :S

I don’t know, both in singing and humming I couldn’t produce the same results as you did when fixing a part of my vocal chart for me.
