Not entirely custom related but I’m sure many people here encountered this issue.
I can’t play music from any other software while Reaper is open. At first I just got used to it, but it’s really becoming a problem now. Whenever I want to do stuff like check a youtube video of the band performing the song, I have to close Reaper and honestly it’s really annoying.
I googled it but none of the solutions worked for me.
Anyone knows what to do?
February 10, 2018 at 4:30 pm #495261That’s not a feature of Reaper, that sounds like a driver issue. And from what I recall from looking at your Reaper file, you had armed a lot of your tracks for some reason to record. Disarm all your tracks in Reaper as your sound card is dedicating everything to recording and not allowing any playback (which does make sense). You don’t need to have any tracks armed anyway unless you’re recording dryvox. But even then, record and disarm.
February 10, 2018 at 5:58 pm #495264Are you using ASIO or ASIO4ALL? These tend to take completely over the sound card.
And I don’t think that’s true about the recording part, I’ve used REAPER to record window’s sounds more than once and it works fine. (By window’s sound I mean every single bit of audio that softwares outputs on the PC). You can also point REAPER to any sound source so that’d be silly for REAPER to mute everything else anyways since REAPER will only listen to the source you point it to.

Yeah I’m using ASIO4ALL. I think that’s the problem too. What do you recommend to use instead?

Depends on your soundcard. I’ve had both instances where I can do multiple or do nothing depending on the computer I was using. But yes, I was referring to the driver anyways, which is what is taking over the audio.
February 10, 2018 at 9:45 pm #495273ASIO4ALL is really only usefull if your goal is to reduce latency (i.e. playing an instrument), so I’d suggest just using your normal driver unless what you are doing requires low latency.

if you’re doing dryvox, it can be quite important.
February 12, 2018 at 2:10 pm #495330Thanks! It is now fixed. I changed the sound card.
I’ll hijack this for a quick question – for a song with quite prominent double tracked chorus (but not harmonies – basically the same melody double tracked) – do I chart two identical harmonies? Or just leave it as one vocal?

Entirely up to you. If both recordings can be heard distinctly, it’s perfectly acceptable to author both.
