Newb here, I haven’t authored any customs yet. I’d like to start with some very simple projects like adding missing notes in existing songs. Is it possible to make a patch for an existing song, like the official files that add Pro instruments to an existing song? I want to add some missing hits to an existing drum chart. Or do I have to make a whole new song file with any adjustments I make baked in?

cool thanks. Is it possible to just edit/replace the Pro Drum Expert chart even though it already has one? The patches that add Pro Drums or Harmonies seem to be adding a new chart type rather than editing/replacing an existing one.
May 11, 2017 at 8:53 pm #484938It replaces the part you want to replace. You can’t just add a single note to a file and add it to the existing MIDI track via a patch. You need to force the game to load another track (in this case new drum track); the fixed one; which needs to be a full track.

Well it sounds like he just wants to extract the midi from a CON, add a couple notes, and then overwrite the old midi in the existing CON. Which isn’t too difficult at all. He’ll just have to make sure he wipes his cache or change the song id and file name.

If it’s a custom sure it’s a nice way to proceed; but for official stuff I’m pretty sure the RBHP way is optimal.
May 12, 2017 at 8:06 am #484976The RBHP way is the only allowed way to distribute your updated charts for official HMX and RBN songs. For customs that you can redistribute, that is a nice way to do it, though it does double bandwidth.
Also, cache wipes are not necessary if only the charts change. If you add harmonies and/or (pro) keys, the dta file must change and a cache wipe is needed.

Only changes to DTA content require a change of ID or a cache wipe.
May 15, 2017 at 6:18 am #485082Thanks all, I was originally thinking of adding a couple notes in Cities in Dust, official DLC, but having found some customs that have everything but a drum track, maybe my efforts would be more worthwhile there.
