I’ve started working with another author, where I do guitar, he does keys. He sent me an intro to a song with a number of overlapping chords, and a long sustain with notes added. This makes sense in keys (left hand holding a note, right playing a melody), but is apparently illegal in guitar charts. I looked up the Docs, and found that this is legal for keys:
“In keyboard authoring, we are allowed to use overlapping gems to represent broken chords.
For 5 lane authoring, however, you should not overlap more than 3 notes at a time. If there is a sequence of overlapping notes, you may need to break up the overlaps.”
Sure enough, I tested in with Magma, and the project compiled.
However, when I tried to play the song, the lower notes were not present. Magma compiled the song, but cut out the green or green-red sustain. What’s going on?
Is this because I am playing keys on guitar, or are the extra notes gone?
How should such sections be charted? Any suggested tricks?
Post the MIDI so we can check it.
Looks fine, it’s probably because you’re using guitar to play it. You need to shorten all sustains though, at least a 1/16th, maybe 3 1/32nd at that speed.

It IS because he’s playing on Guitar. I had ported over Demons by Darkest Hour from GH:WoR and posted the original chart to Keys as well. The Keyboard showed the overlapping notes, while doing the Keyboard part with Guitar the notes were missing. I find it very ignorant why Keys are able to do this but guitars can’t.
To bypass the limitation, I do a mock-up of the same key-presses for the Guitar (5-Lane) chart:
A G-R-Y overlap chord for guitar I chart like a G-GR-GRY with the latter 2 as HO-PO’s so it still requires the exact finger presses that the overlap would’ve required in the original.
