Hi, me again, and no I don’t ever shut up

Not a poll this time, but just wondering if there’s an established “code” for the relationship between these three.

My older brother had some house, progressive house on in his car today, I love some of the trance-y stuff (a lot of Chicane is good IMO), so naturally I thought about charting it.

This would be a way off yet (got songs to focus on atm) but just curious, what do people prefer when it come to songs like this? (I could’ve made another poll for this…)

Let’s say in a normal song, that keys and guitar both have easily distinguished parts that play consistently throughout. Easy, they are both charted separately.

However, in a synth-based song, with no guitar, do we chart a synth to the guitar to avoid taking away the most popular instrument? (of course if it was charted to keys then one would have to enable “All Instruments” and disable scoring.)

Or do you do both? have keys and guitar replicated throughout the song? Or two different synths? IDK

There are a few possibilities, and I might look into charting some house/trance etc (I don’t care if you think it’s not appropriate SUCK IT UP) so wanted some opinions (I noticed I want a lot of opinions on a lot of things, sorry and thanks).

I haven’t worded this post the best so I’ll elaborate in replies if people are also curious about Trance or if they’d like to see some in Rockband (not expecting many enthusiastic drummers… XD)

Chart the main or most pronounced synth to keys and the rhythm to guitar. Look at Freezepop’s “Less Talk More Rokk” but instead pretend the guitar is keys and the bass is guitar. That’s what I would do.

Also don’t worry about being too talkative. I’m currently the newest member with the most posts so you shouldn’t worry until you surpass me.

Hahaha, thanks, I quite enjoy connecting with other authors, and that’s what the site is for right?

Is it ever acceptable to have the five-lane keys and guitar playing the same thing do you think? Even if it’s only occasionally throughout the song?

It’s definitely acceptable to have them playing the same thing, it happens quite often in rock and to be sure even more often in EDM.

Provided there ARE 2 instruments though.

^ that was my concern. If a song could be completely charted without guitar, should it be? I’m guessing yes, but it just seemed a shame to remove the most popular instrument from a chart, and wondered if people would rather bend the rules to increase enjoyment (especially where synths sound really “busy”). Not a huge difference to me personally though.

I thought maybe it could have be addressed case-by-case (which is why I asked), where if a songs’ synths sounded (tongue-twister) thick enough (like there may be more than one) can a guitar “help-out”, e.g play a rhythm etc?

Don’t mull over it too much, again just trying to test the waters and find what other people think, because there’s a million different things to go on in the world of music and no amount of documentation will completely standardise an operation like this, so there will be anomalies aplenty haha.

Unrelated Note: I’m going to download the various tools you have to aid charting (amazing btw you guys are quality  ), and I saw somewhere that for a song to be classed as “gold star” difficulty reductions they required “human review”, I’m assuming that one can auto chart reductions and then modify them to improve quality to achieve this “gold star”?

If there’s only one synth part, then I would say chart that on keys and just have no playable guitar part. Otherwise, I would suggest basically the same thing Banshee said.

Also considering the idea of doing multiple versions. Take this song for example (not house/trance but it still works as an example here):

This song is set up fairly well for a band – the main bass part would obviously be on bass, white the lead synth and the textural piano would be keys/guitar (not sure which would be which, though). However, that synth bassline at the beginning would is very distinctive and would also be fun to play keys on. So there could be a “band” version as well as a version focused on just keys playing whatever’s most prominent, or even a version that puts the more fun leads on the more popular instrument, guitar. It could be a lot of work to do this though, so perhaps it’s not really worth it. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

If you mean for playing 5-lane keys on guitar, you can unlock the ability to do that without turning on AIM by completing the Guitar immortal goal (50 on-disc songs completed on guitar with 5 stars on Medium, or 3 stars on a higher difficulty).

Huh, I did not know that, thanks.

When it comes to charting these customs I think I will simply establish a standard that best fits the rules and try to stay as close to it as possible. I am leaning towards omitting the guitar for some, but I will see when it comes to it.

          Thank you for responding guys.

P.S My current charts are coming along really well, although assistance is always appreciated. Check my sig for the list and details.

I was actually wondering that myself. It appears users will use CAT and then go over the reductions and polish them but still mark them as CAT-reduced in the DB. So would human-reviewed/edited CAT reductions be worthy of the gold star?

No, we’re gonna track down any user who used the “Reduce to triple hits” command in example, force them to do the same thing but one note by one manually and recompile.

Christ sarcasm is hard to read on the internet.

Nice to know though. I wasn’t entirely sure whether the gold star could be used for manual reductions only or if CAT was a viable option as long as they were reviewed. I thought it was the latter but doesn’t hurt to ask.
