Notes become slightly off when copying/pasting

March 12, 2017 at 6:23 pm #394957This is a weird issue that I frequently have, and I haven’t been able to figure out any patterns as to when it occurs, other than that it happens when I copy/paste large sections of notes. But it only happens about 20% of the time. I have snap to grid on and I always make sure the red line is lined up with the measure before I hit paste. Usually the first few notes in the selection will copy normally and then at some point the notes will start being off by .01 (see in the second screenshot, it starts to occur during 48.3). If anyone else has encountered this issue please let me know. Any help is appreciated.March 12, 2017 at 6:56 pm #482623
I had this issue frequently then I switched to ctrl+click dragging to copy notes. Haven’t had an issue since.

Or, just quantize the notes after you copy them.

March 12, 2017 at 7:33 pm #482627Did not know ctrl+click was an option. I’ll try it out today, thanks guys!
March 12, 2017 at 11:40 pm #482635Also (and i just found out about this today), there is a “paste preserving position in measure” [Ctrl+Shift+V] option when you right click. that might work too!

That sounds ideal. Thanks for posting about that, did not know about it lol
March 13, 2017 at 9:05 am #482640I’ve always just quantized the notes after pasting. I can only offer a guess as to why this happens, being that the notes you paste over maintain their exact positioning from when they came from, not taking the changes in tempo into account and thus only the first note will be properly in place when you paste.
March 13, 2017 at 10:28 am #482642Run the Polish notes command in CAT when this happens: it usually manages to rewrite the MIDI code and force Reaper to comply. This is valida for Reaper 4.22, if you’re using a newer version it’s broken and this behaviour is normal.

polish note command doesnt always fix it like you said but ive found out that Ctrl + A then Q to quantize always works

It doesn’t. First of all, quantizing all notes in a single go means you have gone over the entire song to check you don’t have tripets, otherwise you break them (in short, unless you are an experienced author, NEVER quantize all notes in one go). Then, you can quantize them all you want (which you should in the first place anyway): once you copy them they will still be off grid.

Just as a heads up. I use this as well. There is still likely a problem where the notes paste about .01 off. Always, always, always…. make sure you run quantization when you are finished on each track. Taking into account what Far said. I personally always use Quant/Polish with “Selected notes only”. Select all of the notes (ctrl+a), use a grid that is the lowest common denominator for the main* portion of your notes, and then use ctrl+click or ctrl+drag to deselect notes that are not on that grid (ie, triples usually).
