Hello, I’d like to ask some more experienced drum charters for advice. There are two fills in this song, at measure 148 and 149, as well as 156 and 157. I usually use MIDIs as a reference, and if the MIDI is inaccurate I try to transcribe by ear. The MIDI I have for this song isn’t super accurate, and the fill is too crazy for me to transcribe. Can any experienced drum charters help me out on this?

You should probably give this chart a good proofreading. There are a lot of misplaced kick notes. As for your fills:

M148: My best guess would be Y->Y->B->B->G->K->Either RY or RG. The last one with the red sounds hat-ish, so probably RY.

M156: B->Y->R->Y->B->K->B->Y->R->Y->B->Y->R->Y->B->K->B->Y->R->Y->B->K->RG->RG. Seems like a Dave Grohl or Travis Barker type of fill. Those last G’s are cymbals, BTW.

Thanks dude, The first pass I’m doing the cymbals and fills, and I’ll go back and edit the snares and kicks with some EQ to accentuate them. Thanks for the help!

      For the first fill (148-149):

The “hats” that Ryan heard very well may be a hi-hat pedal, but I believe it’s a tambourine either played by someone else or overlayered in the master mix. That’s something to ignore, or at most chart as a “hi-hat pedal animation”. The Green note toms at 148.2.5, 148.4.5, and 149.2.5 could very well be charted at Blues if you wanted. They are floors and should be green, but some charters don’t like to use G toms near G crashes. They should be G, but you can make them B if you want.

      For the second fill (156-157):

As a heads up, your song could use a good pass again with tempo mapping. Technically speaking, your whole song is actually an 8th off where the measures should fall. This song lands in the same trap that Motley Crue’s Kickstart My Heart had which is that there is an accent on the 8th and not on the downbeat of each measure. I know it’s hard to tempo map with that, but it’s possible. Just saying… as it did make this second hard to visually chart as thing didn’t fall where they should have. Also, touch up the measure before. Those are charted on a triplet grid, and you way has the last couple notes off sync.

Regardless, here is what I have for this. This is one of those fills that’s meant to be played on a real kit with a snare between the legs and a left hand for the “yellow” high tom. People with Ions or E Kits set up like a real kit have this easier. Also, the Blue’s here are technically* G floor toms…. but in this fill type we make them Blue so the stock kits have a chance. Note that yes, as Ryan said, the last 2 notes here are crashes and not toms. Move your markers back as I did.

Thank you! I just re-did the tempo map so it is correct. Also thanks for help with the fills.

Also, in terms of my response.

For the second fill, I believe* that I’m hearing a double base being used. I’m not too knowledgeable with CaC to know if the drummer actually uses a double. Assuming so, that should work. If they don’t or you really don’t believe it’s a double bass fill……. the first Kick Gem for all of those blasts can be converted/charted as a Blue Tom

The drummer only uses one pedal but has trained his foot to be pretty fast, so I might just chart is as a blue tom.
