I am not a fan of songs with guitar strumming in RockBand, I usually find them VERY tedious to play… Strumming chords is VERY BASIC guitar technique, it’s like the first thing you learn when picking up a guitar in your life, easy and relaxing. It does NOT work well in RockBand games, which require exact notes, and where “guitars” have buttons rather than strings.
But eventually, now I have to face the challenge of charting a custom where the whole guitar part is strumming chords. Does anyone have any advice on how to do it, what are good rules of thumb to follow, and the pitfalls to avoid?
I’ve been trying to put chord gems only where a strum is audible, and to follow a principle where accented chords are represented by an extra gem in the chord. For example, if I choose to use the 3-gem chord G-R-Y to represent the C chord in the song, then I have actually charted G-R on non-accented sixteenths and G-R-Y on accented sixteenths. This seemed to be a decent principle, because pressing/lifting the last finger is not too difficult. Then my more general thought was, on sixteenths without any chord gems at all (because in the original song the guitarist is skipping the strumming) the player would just keep the up/down rhythm with the right hand without really triggering the strum bar.
Still, when I tested the song in game, I hated it… but then I hate ALL customs with guitar strumming! How do I know whether I am charting it reasonably or not?
I use spleeter to try and separate all of my tracks now to aid in charting. It often helps in picking things out of the mix.
As far as strumming goes I spend time sitting infront of the RBN Preview window going over the strumming pattern with an un-connected RB guitar and making sure it feels right.
Maybe someone else has some better advice but that’s all I’ve got.
