Am I the only one who doesnt understand the policies for Rock Band DLC and which version of a song they use for said DLC.

An example is them using single edits of some songs but having the full length version of others (an example is Suzie Q and I Heard it through the grapevine by CCR)

You referring to the duration/versions of songs?

Or what is official DLC vs. custom made?

It did really bother me that they used the shortened version of “Suzie Q”, especially since they have the full version of “Heard it Through the Grapevine” as you mentioned.

It’s entirely possible that it’s either a lack of availability for stems or licensing issues (yes even for different edits of songs, licensing is tricky) or it could have been a personal decision by HMX. Either way there’s a lot of these “inconsistencies” but there’s usually a good reason for them.

In most cases you won’t find a direct explanation of why the games got the edits they did. Like Banshee, I imagine a lot of times it was due to licensing or other issues beyond Harmonix’s control, and I suspect a lot of other times it was due to simple ignorance, where Harmonix was given a certain set of stems and didn’t realize those stems didn’t represent the original album version of the song.

However, I’m also sure there are other times where the cuts were intentional on Harmonix’s part. I believe that was the case for “Suzie Q”. I was still active on the old Harmonix forums when that was released, and I remember HMXHenry explaining they didn’t chart the rest of the song, or “Part 2”, because they didn’t feel it was good for the game. I actually kind of agree with that. “I Heard It through the Grapevine” is just as long (actually longer), but it remains a tight song through-out with fun charts for all the instruments and not too much dead time for the vocalist. “Suzie Q”‘s second half on the other hand is rather repetitive and spacey, fun to listen to, but not much of a challenge to pla. They probably thought that would get boring, especially in a party-play setting.
