Scenario #1: (online mode)

    – 1674 DLC and RB3 songs on hard disk

    – Small USB drive, only has TU5 on it, per recommendations, inserted.

    – Song cache located on hard disk

    – Using Xbox Live, everything works as expected.

    Scenario #2: (customs mode)

    – 1674 DLC and RB3 songs on hard disk

    – Non-XBox Live enabled account stored on hard disk

    – 131 customs songs on USB stick

    – Copy of song cache (per instructions) on USB stick (copied from hard disk)

    – TU4 on USB stick

Problem statement: When using scenario #2 (customs mode) my song ratings, scores, and play count are NOT retained for the custom songs. Rating, play count are retained for DLC and RB3 content. Every time I start the XBox, its like starting from scratch with the customs. The RB3 profile for my new account does retain the fan count for the game, but the custom songs seem to “forget” I’ve played them.

Impact: not a huge issue, but it sure would be nice if I could keep track of the custom songs I’ve played and my high score of them.

Anyone else experiencing this or have a recommendation on how I should resolve this problem? I have a hunch it is related to the song cache being on the USB stick, but thus far I’ve just been following directions. There isn’t anything else on the USB besides customs, song cache, and TU4.

Thanks for any help, and forgive my engineering analysis… its hard-coded.

First of all, I would move everything related to TU5 on the stick. My setup and the setup I always recommend is having two USB sticks with the very same structure: TU#, cache file, preferences, gamer account(s). On the hard disk you only have the DLC. That way there’s no way cache, preferences and gamer accounts conflict. The fact that the cache for TU5 is on the hard disk may be the issue.

Second of all, remember that every time you rebuild the cache, you lose all your offline scores, which is all scores for customs. So, the motto is: never rebuild your cache.

Okay, paragraph #1 makes sense. It is pretty easy to move the “online” items (cache file, preferences, account) to the “online” USB. That I can do.

I’m struggling to know how to avoid rebuilding the cache. Is that a setting or a process? Essentially, guide me as to how I would avoid rebuilding cache or at least let me know what I do that causes the cache to be rebuild.

And a second question: would you recommend moving the customs to the hard disk to retain the commonality in your structures?

      Many thanks.

You would only rebuild the cache if you deleted it, or if there was some kind of conflict that forced a rebuild. It’s generally only an issue if you are testing/building customs or using RB:HP.

I would recommend keeping the customs on the TU4 stick, as otherwise they’ll all show up in your playlist under TU5 (but fail to load).

That’s the point. You can’t rebuild it, you force a rebuild by deleting it. Maybe TU4 has an issue with the HDD cache, although you would experience a 15/20 minute cache rebuild every time, so I don’t think that’s the issue. Consider deleting the TU4 cache once, let the game rebuild and see if from that point on scores are saved.

Nope. This is my reasoning: on the HDD I only have items that are and must be shared between installations, and those items are just the official DLC, the only items that can be read with no issues by both installations. The console is then pristine: you insert the TU5 stick and you only have official songs (which prevents you and the game from accidentally adding songs you can’t play anyway to a setlist); you insert the TU4 stick and you have all your songs AND your customs, which by the way are confined to their own “sandbox” and can’t break the game (or, if they do, you can fix it by just removing the stick).

Okay, it seems I left out an important piece of information that I took to be normal behavior but is instead perhaps indicative of a problem. Your answers are great; my questions are perhaps not so much.

Every time I switch from “custom” mode to “online” mode (or back again) my cache gets rebuilt. It takes about 15 mins for everything to reload. It was annoying, but to play customs I’d eat spam for a week. When doing things online, my scores are okay. But when I play customs, my ratings, scores, play count are gone.

Would you recommend anything different based on this new revelation?

Given that information, my first recommendation is to move your TU5 cache to your TU5 stick.

Of coure, as espher said, move it. As I suspected, both TU use the same cache. So the last TU loaded grabs a hold of it and rebuilds it as it sees fit. Now, TU5 only wastes 15 minutes of your time, because all your scores posted online are retrieved. TU4 on the other hand gets the short end of the stick, because all its precious offline scores are wiped out by TU5. So, follow the structure I suggested and you won’t have issues anymore: no more 15 minutes of waiting time, no more scores wiped clean.

Ok – all great advice. It helps when you guys have all the relevant information. I’ll try this later today and will report back with progress. Many thanks for the help thus far.

Ok. I moved my “online” song cache file to the online Zip drive. That drive now contains both the song cache and TU5. When I started RB3 using my online Xbox live account, it “loaded new downloaded content” for about 15 mins.

I then turned off the Xbox (just being thorough) and logged back in with my Xbox live account. I verified my song cache was only on the “online” zip drive. This time when I started RB3, no loading of new content. Took about a minute to find all my DLC. Happiness.

Then I turned off the Xbox again (yes, being overly cautious) and put in my customs Zip drive and loaded my offline account. When starting RB3 this time it still loaded the 102 customs I have on the Zip drive. My scores, ratings, and play counts were gone. As a test, I reviewed one song and then exited RB3 and immediately restarted the game. As expected, no loading of new songs and my ratings were saved.

Now the true test… I turned off Xbox a third time and put together my online configuration. Result: everything loaded perfectly, no waiting. Going back to offline configuration: everything loaded perfectly.

Moral of this overly lengthy discourse in Failure Mode Effects and Analysis: Put the song cache on the Zip drive, dummy.

lol, I was thinking the same thing.

Yes, my antiquated and incorrect vernacular should be updated. I mean, of course, USB stick. But ya’ll get da point, no?
