Hey everyone, so I have a pretty decent amount of FretsOnFire songs and I’m looking to import them to Rock Band 3. I’ve followed some of the tutorials and I keep running in to issues with the midi files in Magma. I assume it’s something I’m not doing correctly so I was wondering if there were any tutorials that someone could guide me to that could help me with this specifically.
July 11, 2014 at 7:24 pm #424485I have never seen a tutorial for doing these. Speaking from experience only some of these are easily converted, some don’t have a tempo map that makes them basically worthless as they will get out of time in RB3.
If you havent already download C3Con tools, click on midi analyzer & drag your mid into the open window. This will give you all the info for the mid. Check how many tempo markers their are, if their is less than 10 the chances of that song playing decent are slim.
After that open midi cleaner & drop the notes mid into the open window, click begin & it should do a bunch of fixes to the mid & will give you a second mid called notes_clean. That is what you load into Reaper
Drop the mid at 1.0 in Reaper then look to see if any guitar/bass/drums notes start before 3.0, if they do the song will not pass through Magma, If they start before select new project, C3 Template & start over dropping the mid at 2.0 or 3.0 this time making sure no notes appear before 3.0
From this point on their are several tutorials available to guide you through the rest of the steps. It requires some patience & a lot of trial & error but is worth it to play the songs you like.

Best thing to do is put the file in Reaper
when u add the Midi
if it says “add song tempo” then theres a good chance that you could convert it.
anyway what Frets songs are you gonna do? let me have a look send em over Pm its the least i can do.

July 21, 2014 at 10:02 pm #425196I released a video tutorial today about converting customs from FoF/Phase Shift to RB3 as it was asked by a friend of mine. Not sure if it’s perfect, but you can take a look
. I’m also planning to do a list of common errors you can get on Magma with solutions I found ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif” />

July 21, 2014 at 11:50 pm #425209Glad to see use of MIDI Analyzer and MIDI Cleaner.
Two things on your use of Magma:
1. If you’re going to use the included blank audio files, why go through all that trouble? Right click on the instrument box and select the audio file from the list.
2. You don’t need to export the MIDI prior to building the song. The Export function is there to allow you to autogenerate whatever Magma is going to autogenerate and export a MIDI you can then import back into REAPER and edit (i.e. you want Magma to autogenerate VENUE but then want to modify it further). If you’re just going to export and then build, without modifying the MIDI, then just go straight to Build.

Wow. I never knew that was there. It’s not exactly obvious ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” /> But now that I know it is there, that will save tons of time and effort.
July 21, 2014 at 11:56 pm #425213I know there isn’t a manual for Magma, but you’d be surprised at all the information found in the Change Log ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif” />
I might make a video this or next weekend showing the process and highlighting all the features people don’t seem to be aware of.

Sweet!
Does it make toast?
July 22, 2014 at 12:18 am #425218Sadly it doesn’t, but it does give you the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything – but you have to know what the question is first ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif” />
July 22, 2014 at 12:28 am #425220I think he just asked it. Does it make toast is the ultimate question of life.

I never knew I could do that! It’ll save me some time for sure.
2. If you’re just going to export and then build, without modifying the MIDI, then just go straight to Build.Just read that on the forum in another post actually. But I don’t know, it feels good to export a midi without Magma returning an error, so I always did it this way
July 24, 2014 at 7:46 pm #425365I’ve had some luck converting FOF songs with a very simple approach.
1) Make a new Reaper project with template.
2) Load the FOF audio at measure 3.1
3) Load the FOF MIDI at measure 3.1. Often the charts don’t show up where they should, so drums might be under vocals. No big deal.
If there is no tempo map, it is pretty useless. Otherwise,
4) Save this as X-MIDI.
5) Save it again as X
Delete all the MIDI files. Go back to the MIDI version, and copy the guitar chart, then paste that into X. Do the same for other instruments. I always add a fake note at measure 3.1, copy everything from there, paste at 3.1, and delete the fake note.
6) Edit.
7) If you can find a better quality audio file, use that to replace the OGG file from FOF and make sure everything is lined up properly.
