Tell me about it. I’m having trouble just trying to get the multitracks for some of these!

I’d be surprised if you found multitracks to most of the British Steel tracks. I’ve been looking literally for months with no luck other than a few pay sites.

Um, I’m pretty sure multitracks aren’t available for most of those. And if they are, congrats, you must have much better Googling skills than I do.

Yeah, I’ve got to say that finding multitracks for stuff like Rush is one thing (those aren’t as bad to find), but for the sonic soundtrack and the AVGN music? I doubt you can find those at all to be totally honest.

Maybe I should use my MP3 files for now.

Trust me. Charting with MP3’s is like trying to drive a car with a blindfold on! You would not want to do it and if you did it would be as hard as knocking out Chuck Norris!

I know. I’ve done it, but it’s possible. It just takes longer is all. With British Steel, it shouldn’t be too rough, the mix is fairly clear for that album, and if you go on and listen to the live versions, they’re different, but not so different that you wouldn’t be able to tell what is being played by who, and that way you can get an idea of what is being played to begin with. I’ve seen those stems around in a few places, and there are other ways of obtaining them that I will not mention here (just for listening purposes of course. I do not endorse any kind of piracy).

I chart with MP3s all the time quite easily. I guess I am therefore better than Chuck Norris. In all seriousness, though, you’ll get used to it. It may be tough at first, but if you really know a song you’ll be able to pick apart which piece is doing what fine enough, given the mix isn’t complete noise.

Yeah , but for some songs charting is literally HELL. Especially with songs that have very hard insturment parts to make out. That is the case with some of those Sonic songs ( Skyscraper Scamper-Day for sure ).

Thats why I think a lot of authors tend to stay away from video game music unless its very well mixed. The Sonic soundtrack is very busy, and while it’s typically well mixed, it’s not easy to tell on a consistent basis where everything is and who is playing what on some tracks. I wouldn’t want to try to chart that lol!

Yeah , but i’m so bent on getting EVERY Sonic song , i’m willing to take that one risk that might change everything ( most likely my computer ).

I’d try charting some other songs first before trying to go after something as difficult as a Sonic song. Mama by Genesis would be a good place to start, because you can kind of tell where everything lies.

In college, when I took my audio classes, we did critical listening exercises to identify sounds in music. It takes practice, but you should try it. Listen to a song, do not pause, do not rewind it. Listen just once and see how many instruments you can identify (this includes counting double tracked guitars, synthesizers, and each individual drum in a drum kit, snare, kick, cymbals, chimes, toms, so on). If you continue to do this once a day, or even just twice a week (thats how often I did it), you’ll notice that you can hear details a lot more clearly in music than you did before. By the end of my three month semester, I could identify most of the tracks in Bostons More Than A Feeling (there are over fifty, just to give you an idea of how far this can get you).

Also, I’d recommend headphones for this if you don’t have a quality sound system as well. Just fifteen dollar headphones can get you miles further than low quality PC speakers believe it or not. My sound system is relatively decent and I still have some trouble and need my cheapy headphones sometimes. You’d be surprised how far even a set of those Gummy ear buds can get you.

Finally, if you are having that much trouble hearing details with MP3 files, I’d recommend trying to find higher quality sound sources (.wav, FLAC, AAC) and listening to them a few times so when you go back to Reaper, you’ll actually hear the missing details that aren’t in the MP3 (its a psychological thing, I don’t really know why this happens).

The problem is it’s hard to trust an MP3, because they’re very compressed, and they aren’t that high a quality file format to start with. When working with MP3’s, I always try to find an MP3 that’s 320kbps. Anything below 200 is typically not usable for me personally, because I really need to have all the detail possible when charting.

Anyhow, back on topic, any specific songs I missed that you folks would like to see on the list? I might move the list to the OP just to make things a little more simple.

Thanks for the tip! It’s gonna’ take a while to make though ( I assure you though , most will be out until the year ends unless otherwise noted ). I actually still have both The Simpsons Theme and I Am… All Of Me ( 2009 Remix )

are still in the works and they are my oldest projects! The Guitar part in I Am is quite a hard one to keep up with proper positioning ( I was using a GH3 custom chart to help ). It starts alternating between the red , yellow , and blue notes for the intro then breaks into some pretty hard fretwork until the first verse which it becomes a pattern of blue , blue , red/yellow/blue chord notes until the first chorus starts. Repeating this process until the end of the song , which ends rather quietly and finally ends with some keyboard , is basically a repeat of the part before the first verse. I’m still looking for errors and letting someone check it until someone polishes it and then i’ll will add extra difficulties and run it through Magma ( not now though ).

Back on topic , we need a lot of full albums from Judas Priest available for DL.
