Hello everybody!
I am opening this thread to talk about a little game project I had, called Super Tapper!
The game pretty much works like Guitar Hero & Rock Band, but will use the computer keyboard and f keys (f1, f2 etc…), which will allow to play with 10 notes instead of 5, bringing more charting possibilities and difficulties.
The game will be a “guitar only” game. The quotation marks means that it will mostly feature guitar and keys, it’s my first game ever, eh.
The soundtrack will feature 60 songs (40 + 20 bonus) and present a variety of genres through the decades, from Iron Maiden to Foster The People, Pantera, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, The Doors and The Offspring to name a few. I also have a (as I am writing this) 613 songs long list of DLC ideas.
So I am asking those who might have some knowledge in game making and programmation what software could I use to bring this game to life. I am willing to learn C++ if needed, and I don’t know about other languages.
I have first been thinking about “modding” Phase Shift and use two 5-lanes, but I couldn’t figure out how to make it.
Thank you for reading and thank you for your advice in advance!
Also here’s a cool logo:

July 29, 2016 at 4:48 pm #472589I think that’s Jake Tapper.

Yeah but what does he have to do with it?
Am I missing a joke or something?
July 29, 2016 at 5:06 pm #472592OOOH OKAY I GET IT
YEAH
SUPER TAPPER
I was confused because I never heard of him, I thought it was like a meme that could mean something is stupidThanks Mr. Farottone, I am now having a hard time stopping to laugh..
July 29, 2016 at 5:13 pm #472594Phase Shift is closed source so you wouldn’t be able to modify the program so heavily. You could consider using Performous (written in C++ I think) as a starting point.
July 29, 2016 at 6:19 pm #472600I know what you wrote, but this is what I read:
“Hey guys! I’m going to race in the Le Mans 24 Hours! Do you have any advice on what cars I should drive? I’m willing to learn to drive stick if necessary.”
Game design and creation is difficult and complex. And not usually something that you decide to do without even having any experience with programming. Don’t let FoF, Phase Shift and even EOF fool you into thinking anyone can create a game, much less a rhythm one that requires even more precision and fine tuning. Those guys are unusually talented and dedicated.
By all means, get your feet wet with programming, learn the basics. If in in a couple of years you still want to try to make a game, then have fun. I’d love to see it. But my expectations are low.
And it’s not just about being a bummer. I’ve tried. I did the Flappy C3 game/clone, I did a lot of the work to get there for cPlayer, and other non-C3 related projects. And I’ve never, not once, had the discipline, dedication and ability to take the project to completion in a way that even comes close to what a game would require. So I’m speaking from my experience.
July 29, 2016 at 6:30 pm #472602Thank you for your advice, I am aware that creating a game is not a piece of cake at all, I tried and failed so many times.
I could call this game a sort of fantasy I always had to create something like that, but my will to make myself feel like I am worth doing something good spoke the loudest. I have a few friends that are into programming and I could get some lessons from them.(EDIT: So by accident I now know that you can send a message with Shift+Space, woops)

July 29, 2016 at 7:18 pm #472608I remember trying to make a similar game with PowerPoint and VB. It was actually pretty fun for a bit but it was during my middle school years where I hardly knew jack about programming so it never took off.
It’s a tough endeavour indeed. As TrojanNemo pointed out, you can’t simply say “You know what? I’m gonna make a game.” and dive in with a finished product in a few months. I’ve been going to college for four years of video game design and have self-taught much of it and I still couldn’t create something like that easily.
If you’re serious about this, do a lot of research. Work on learning the basics of code and UI and start with small, simple programs and work your way up. It’s a long and frustrating process I know, but in the end you’ll have the skill to create this game with a faster development process and overall better quality.

You got me, Super Tapper is an HD 4K adaptation of this game, with characters modeled on real people, featuring Oculus Rift support for an ultimate beer serving experience, also featuring new Beerodrama mode, which shows the ups and downs of your bartender career, with 10 bonus beer brands you can get by preordering!

Unfortunately…you didn’t say anything about online play, so expect copious amounts of bitching about the lack of that feature on the “Super Tapper” reddit!
