    Hello,

i’ve tryied to convert CON files to PhaseShift with C3 CON tools Phase shift converter.

The conversion process seems to work correctly, as the log says:

Loaded and processed songs.dta file for song #2 successfully
    Song #2 is ***** (2x Bass Pedal)
Extracted album art file **** successfully
Converted album art file to ‘album.png’ successfully
    Extracted MIDI file *****.mid successfully
Separating mogg file into its component ogg files
    Success
Analyzing ogg files and deleting silent files
Successfully processed 2 of 2 files
    Done!

In the created folder i see these files:

    notes.mid

    song.ogg

    notes.mid

But song.ogg seems to be a stereo file. There aren’t separate tracks for the various instruments as in the other phase shift songs: in fact when i play the file in phase shift, it always sounds all the instruments not recognizing and thus muting the one i want to play.

How can i correctly convert CON file to phase shift in a way that it can recognize the instruments?

    Thanks

This depends on the custom you’ve converted. If the song has multi-tracks in it, it will bring down the instruments into its separate files in Phase Shift, unless encrypted. If the song doesn’t have stems, it’d only take the backing track or whatever track was used down to one audio file. It would either show up as “guitar.ogg” or “song.ogg”.

So when in Phase Shift, since there is no separate stems, it’ll just play from the backing track

      Understood. Thanks.

So people normally play along with all the instruments enabled ? Or in the rock band version they are correctly muted while you’re playing ?

Songs with multitracks are kind of rare in the custom world unless they are from another game (Guitar Hero for example) or someone put their hands on the multitracks of the song for X reason. You shouldn’t expect all songs to have multitracks.

If they don’t have multitracks on Phase Shift they don’t have them for Rock Band either.

All C3 customs have encrypted multitracks that get mixed down to stereo when converted to Phase Shift format.

Is that only those that chose to be encrypted; or really all of them?

All *C3* customs are encrypted. Non-C3 (community) customs are or are not encrypted based on the author’s decision.

So, if i’ve understood correctly, downloading a Xbox, PS3 or WII custom from your database it will have multitrack, so that the instrument could be muted in-game. While downloading the PhaseShift version we get only the stero track, and this is the reason why i can’t mute the instruments in PhaseShift. Am i right ?

            Correct.

For some of the songs, yes. Like it was already said the majority of customs don’t have stems. Last I saw C3 had maybe 700 songs with stems. Those would work as expected in RB3 but are downmixed to stereo for the Phase Shift version.

To answer the question I anticipate you will ask… because we decided we wanted our multitracks encrypted. I asked the Phase Shift developers to implement encryption and they declined. So too bad for Phase Shift players.

              ok, it’s clear now.

Just for my curiosity, as i don’t have rock band: a normal rock band user plays the songs with all the instrumental tracks active while playing ? ( as the majority of them don’t have stems ). So if you, for example, play guitar, the original guitar track is not muted during the game. I thought i’d always be muted in the original game and that would only sound when you’d actually play the string in the real guitar…

Official songs mute the player’s track when the player misses notes. That requires stems otherwise there’s no single audio stream that can be appropriately muted. That is why so many customs can’t do this: Because the author didn’t have access to or didn’t use stems in the authoring process.
