Hello!

 

I realized that you can record midi notes in Reaper using a midi keyboard, since RB3 keyboard can be used as a midi I want to connect it to my PC (mostly, for authoring vocal midi notes).

 

What do I need to do it? (obviously the midi-usb cable).

You shouldn’t need any additional drivers. But yes, you would need the midi-usb cable. With that cable, plug the cable that says IN into the MIDI port on the keyboard. You need to plug the USB part into the computer and then open Reaper.

 

Make an empty track and arm it for recording (the “AR” button on the mixer for that track). Right click on the arm record button and make sure that Input: MIDI -> “Name of Device” -> All Channels is selected.

 

Now when you press record on the mixer, notes should show up when you press down on them on the keyboard.

 

(P.S. Your Midi keyboard might say “MIDI Out” but you’d still plug the MIDI In cable into it. The logic here is that the In cable receives the Output from the device.)

That’s not always true. I use the M-Audio Uno adapter and the cables are MIDI OUT and MIDI IN for what they are labeled on the MIDI device being connected to. In this case, MIDI OUT is connected to the keytar.

I was doing with the virtual midi keyboard of Reaper but things would be easier with the RB3 Keyboard. Now I have to get the midi-usb cable.

The really cheap EBay ones have an exceptionally spotty track record.

You’re probably better off getting a recognized brand name like Edirol, or M-Audio.

I finally got the midi cable but it doesn’t work. Do I need to set something in reaper’s preferences?

this a guy who uses this cable. the only difference it’s that I have an xbox keytar

You shouldn’t need to change anything, but do make sure Reaper recognizes it. Go to Options->Preferences, under Audio, click on MIDI devices. Your device should be listed there under inputs (make sure device is connected BEFORE opening Reaper).

 

After seeing it’s in the list, arm a track for recording (left click the “ar” button on the track), right click on the “ar” button. Under the portion of the menu where all the “Input:” selections are, make sure that Input: MIDI->”Your Device Name”->All Channels is selected. Then click on the Record Button on the console (or press Ctrl+R), you should now be able to play along.
