Hi everyone,
I’m pretty new to charting songs, and I’m wondering how nuanced the tempo map should be. For context, I’m working on a song that almost keeps a consistent tempo through the whole thing. I try to line up all the drum transients to the grid, but there are a few measures where the drums are a bit ahead, and then a few measures where they are a bit behind (At a max of about 20ms in both directions). Should I tweak the tempo throughout the song to match it better, or should i just keep it constant?
Thanks.

January 1, 2020 at 8:14 pm #508882Does it look like the original drummer is being sloppy on an occasional SINGLE measure? In that case I don’t think it’s good to follow his sloppiness, but instead it’s better to chart it the way it was supposed to be played. So when the player reaches that point, if he follows the rhythm by ear he’ll play correctly. It’s supposed to be a rhythmic game after all more than a visual shoot em up ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
But if the original drummer is purposefully sloppy then the chart may probably be just as sloppy. However when this happens there is usually some consistency in when the sloppy beat occurs, it’s not just a random point.
On the other hand, if the whole band slows down or speeds up for MORE than one measure, then I would definitely follow the tempo changes.

It looks like I’ll be adding the tempo changes. It’s always many measures at a time.
January 1, 2020 at 8:22 pm #50888520ms is a significant gap between the tempo map and the actual audio cue. Personally, I would at least make sure every beats are tempo mapped if necessary, though for Rock Band, a higher resolution is not really needed, except for rare special cases.
January 1, 2020 at 8:48 pm #508888Tweak the tempo. But that’s your choice, we have songs that work out ok even with the wrong time measures like Prince – Let’s Go Crazy.
January 1, 2020 at 9:04 pm #508891I just did half of the song matching every beat, and the drum part looks much better now! It’s amazing what a few miliseconds will do.
I’m afraid, though, that now the other parts might feel off. If the drummer hits the drum a little early now, won’t that make the other instruments feel too early, since they’re all on the same tempo map?

January 2, 2020 at 1:19 am #508895The drum is 99.9999% of the time the metronome of the group, so I wouldn’t worry about that to be honest.

January 3, 2020 at 2:20 am #508925I just listened to the song. I hope that when you said “almost keeps a consistent tempo through the whole thing” you where referring to the middle section, because that’s a MAJOR BPM change. The song is about 83 BPM but it changes to 130 BPM in the middle section. Then it goes back to 83. You should place a tempo marker every four beats for a good tempo map.

I forgot to mention the middle section, but I already had that tempo change taken care of. I was talking about the slower parts. It is about 83, but it sways up and down very slightly. I now do have a marker on every beat (or at least the beats that need them).
