I apologise if this sounds the dumbest question ever I guess the variance is just too large! But don’t worry, I’m not looking for one single answer, I am just curious to hear people’s different experiences, since I have no idea how long it would ever take ME to do the same.

And yes, I am asking this because eventually I would like to start creating customs myself one day. It’s been on my mind since the very first day I got the games only half a year ago, and until I accidentally stumbled on your forum last week I didn’t even know it was possible.

Feel free to share your thoughts about how slow or fast the process is for you, and maybe also how different it was at the beginning!

Total hours, I’d guess 20 to 30 or so for me. But those hours can be spread over the course of weeks or months, and I also give my releases all the bells and whistles: custom venues, dryvox lip sync, etc. Vocal charts take the most time to craft.

I joined C3 two years ago and I have one completed custom in the database and about 9 bass guitar chart collaborations. I have 5 songs that are work on progress and the main hold up is the tempo mapping. I have tempo mapped them all at least once and some of them 4 or 5 times because I am not happy with them. Now some of those 4 or 5 times were due to me putting Magma in the wrong directory which produced randomized corruption in my customs. – and I didn’t know what was wrong. The other thing that is slowing me down is that for some of my customs there are zero musical resources available and the authoring has to be done by ear. On top of that I spend a lot of time on the charts compared to how quickly an experienced author would. I haven’t kept track of how much time one custom takes me because I have 5 on the go right now but it takes me probably at least 10 times longer than an experienced author or more, partly due to perfectionism and partly because it just takes me a long time lol. I am overdoing my tempo maps at the moment though since using DoNotPassGo advanced tempo map technique and trying to get my maps much tighter than my first tempo map. One song in particular I feel really needs this and the others are just more tempo map practise. I have done maybe more tempo mapping than charting since Christmas to try to get better. It also depends on what songs you want to chart. My works in progress are challenging me on drums, keys and guitar solos especially. I have to do 2x drums to and some vocal harmonies too I think. Also tempo mapping solo guitar and piano is challenging for me too. But I keep a log of my progress here in the wip thread and update it most days that I am charting. My progress rate is probably three slowest here, but I’m focused on doing the best that I can for each custom that I do.

At first for me it could’ve been anywhere from 20-30 hours to chart all instruments. As I got better, I started being able to complete full-band customs with custom venues and lip-syncing in usually about 14~16 hours or less depending on the song.

Same with akaisenshi above me except I don’t do custom venues. I’d say the time it takes to do venues it takes me to make diy stems. Of course vocals take the longest at about 1-3 hours with instruments only taking 30 minutes to and hour. The long process includes all the details in the charts and stuff.

It sucks actually, I always want to dedicate time to making them but life gets in the way (yeah, I said it)

My first custom took me about 15 hours of total work to release. I’ve spent more time on customs since then. I spent a lot of time working on All I Want for Christmas Is You, for example. Other songs take basically no time. I have an as-of-yet unreleased custom that took me four hours to fully complete.

The first time you do it it will take a long time as you figure things out. Then, as you figure things out you may find that your standards get higher and higher meaning it will still take a long time.

I tend to do everything except lower difficulties (which I’ve recently starting using CAT for), and from start to finish it may take a few weeks of spending a couple hours a day to get something I’m satisfied with. Then, years later I will look back on it and still find flaws with it. The point is, nothing’s ever perfect.

I honestly have no idea because I don’t do one at a time. I’m constantly going back and forth depending on which collaborator gets me that sweet sweet guitar chart back. But let’s see if I can break it down using a 5 minute song from start to finish.

                  Tempo map: 30-60 minutes

Drums: 90 minutes includes 3-4 reviews after initial charting

                  Bass – 30-45 minutes

                  Guitar – 45-60 minutes

Vocals – 60-90 minutes (depends on harmonies and vocal variations)

                  Keys: 60 minutes

                  Venue: 90 minutes

                  Average time: 9 hours

Now I’ve been doing this for nearly 5 years so I’m pretty efficient but someone starting out you’re going to take possibly twice as long in my estimation. Hope that helps.

I’ve never charted a song but recently I’ve been working on Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence for drums and guitar and it took 2 and a half months as I’m still in school and the song last 42 minutes.

P.S. I’m still debating on whether I should upload it.

I watched the whole pksage’s 2-hours video tutorial on authoring customs with Reaper… I can totally see myself spending 50+ hours on a single song there. But it looks like an awesome lot of fun I am really looking forward to learning authoring customs one day. I am an (ex-) amateur musician and I have transcribed by ears hundreds of songs on the electric guitar back in the day, so maybe that will help me a little. I also still have lots of music sheet books to check against, these could be really useful for example to pitch vocals.

I always calculate the time I invested in charting a song, this is in general terms:

-Remix: 40 minutes (change details in a lot of cases)
                          -Count-In: 5 minutes
                          -Fade-In & Fade-out: 10 minutes

I usually procrastinate a lot so in the end it comes on around 2 days in total to author a song because I get easily diverted.
The fastest I have done is Chan Chan by Buena Vista Social Club where I purposely timed myself and it took me about 7 hours while being entirely focused on it, and the slowest has been Autobahn, that I have worked on almost everyday from January 3-4 2015 to January 1st 2017.

How!? It literally takes me at least 2-3 hours to do vocal notes for a song, granted I’m doing notes and lyrics simulatenously
