How easy should be easy?

I’ve been trying to follow the wiki rules for authoring and I noticed that they make Easy very easy. In fact it’s so easy that it feels pointless, particularly for drums.

Those rules are very sensible when it comes to designing songs for the official games. I think the idea is that they want you to be able to make your children and your uninterested spouse into playing with you, and it seems Harmonix has always been extremely worried on people’s ability to play drums.

But does it still make the same sense for customs?

I’m testing my first custom together with my primary school kids and their first reaction on Easy is that it is so easy that they got bored in the middle of it :/

On the other hand, they often wish there was more graduality within the other difficulties, and so do I. So I would rather have Easy be a stepping stone to learn a particular song, but not every song’s Easy mode be meant as a tool to learn an instrument from zero, not anymore… there’s plenty of in-game songs for that already!

My feeling is that by following the rules strictly, I am charting the Easy difficulty for nobody because nobody will ever play my customs on Easy drums. No one who uses customs is a beginner anymore after all.

Drums are my biggest concern because of the rules about not not using 3 different colours in the same section and never having to kick at the same time as a hand hit no matter how slow.

Do you really follow the Easy rules strictly?

If you do, do you ever play drums on Easy?

      What about other instruments?

Would you find it more useful for you if Easy would be rather “Almost Medium” and maybe Medium was slightly increased?

For easy drums, I usually go with the notes on every beat and no kick unless the kick is the only thing played. For other instruments, I try to also follow the “one note per beat” rule. I also make sure there is no chord on easy.

Yes, I follow the rules for reductions fairly strictly. No, I don’t play any instruments on easy since I’m fairly adept at the game. Even so, I know customs have frequently been played at public gatherings, and likely still are, maybe more than we realize. So, it’s certainly not just me or the immediate customs crowd that these are charted for. Consequently, I agree with the docs that easy should in fact be “EASY!” If someone finds it to easy, they can step up to medium.

Drums have a bit more of a gap between easy and medium, it’s true, since with easy drums you’re not supposed to pair anything with the bass drum. Even so, medium is supposed to have only paired bass notes on the down beats ( the “1”, “2”, “3”, “4” beats of the song, not in between those beats), so I don’t think it’s too big of a gap.
