Hi all, is there a way to ensure that two audio tracks stay in sync? I found on youtube a backing track and a vocals only track, they start out in sync, but then begin to drift apart, then the song sounds like a horrible mess. I’m using a third version from cd to compare.

I have tried just cutting sections out and moving them in reaper to make the wave form peaks line up. Is there another way? I thought there might be a way via makers in reaper/audacity etc (like a tempo map) to say that two points should always be in sync, and the audio is sped up or slowed down to fit. Are there basic things i should check with each source?

    Thanks.

Use the CD version as the “master” to compare the other tracks to, and then add stretch markers (Shift-W) to them and move them around to make them all line up.

You could also split the tracks and hold Alt whilst dragging the split to stretch the items on either side, but using stretch markers is much cleaner.

Make sure you untick the “Preserve pitch when changing rate” box in the item properties for the tracks you’re stretching, because you only want it to be resampling, not pitch-shifting or anything like that.

If you hold Alt and click+drag the end of an audio track, you should be able to stretch and shrink it. Play around with that until they line up properly.

Thanks for both replies, I’ll try them both and see how I go.

Well first problem. I don’t have anything about stretch markers in my version windows 4.22. After watching a youtube video (guy using 4.77) stretch markers are what I want, cool. A search of reaper.fm says that stretch markers (Timestretch) was first introduced in version 4.40 & latest change effecting these markers was 4.73. the highest version 4.x is 4.78.

Now I don’t want to mess up my customs creation process by changing to a version of reaper that is not “supported” or causes issues. So I guess I have 2 options install newer version and just fix and render audio, then use this new file in 4.22 to make the project. I have seen people mention two versions in side-by-side installs.

Or option 2, is there a version above 4.40 that works happily with magmac3, CAT tools, python etc that others are using.

Use a dedicate software to do that, that’s what I did for a couple of MJ songs. I used something free but I don’t remember what it was. I found this now:

I’m sure there is more. Do not go over the recommended Reaper version, because as soon as you save it with a later version MIDI notes start wandering when you open with the correct version.
